Although D/M is a great Isbell song, I'd have to say that Goddamn Lonely Love is better IMO. Isbell is a great writer that deserves his own spotlight, but he's always been behind Cooley for me.
I think the best DBT song was written by Patterson (The Living Bubba) but most of his songs are marginally ok compared to Cooley and Isbell. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I'm more of a Cooley fan, but Hood is damn good too. You couldn't pay me to pick a favorite DBT song, it changes depending on my mood

Cooley is in my estimation the best songwriter in Rock music right now.

Isbell made a mistake leaving DBT.

I follow him on twitter and he comes off as a super normal guy.

I met him one night and Tuscaloosa and he was a nice dude.

Cooley, Isbell and Hood are all capable of brilliance. It was pretty rad when they were all in the same band.

I can't hate him, especially since he's helping out AA (and I think they're better than dbt)

I don't hate him. I've just had many run ins with him and he's been a dbag every time. I always thought "well maybe he's having a bad day" nay! He's just kind of a doucher.

But I do like his music and like him producing AA's record.

but not even a top 10 DBT song.

This.

I've given up on Hood completely. Isbell's best to me is The Day John Henry Died.

Truth. People know who he is because he played in DBT. He's really good but that band made him.

Great song though.

And this is where I'll sound off this opinion. Patterson Hood's ego destroyed DBT. Could have been such a complete band, many singers (not just Isbell and Hood)... could have been very much like The Band... but Hood wanted to be the main man too much.

Well of course

That's retarded to me. The band made him write the best songs of DBT?

When he left, the songwriting took a big step back.

Robert plant, people only know him because he was in LZ. That band made him.

And he's done some pretty solid solo work but nothing compared to what he did with Led Zepp.

I'm not as wild about the musical side since Isbell left but the songwriting from Cooley and Hood has been just as solid, imo.
