Fixed gear bikes vs. Freewheel

Looking at getting my son and I some decent road bikes and haven't really looked at fixed gear till lately. What's the scoop on these?

Get a single speed. You can get a flip-flop hub if you really want and you'll have the option to go fixie. I love riding single speed.

what's the downside? I mean,I've rode freewheels all my life and am generally interested in these.

If he wants to be cool with a multi-colored fixie, at least get him on that can be switched over to freewheel when he realizes riding fixie is for suckers. Some have a simple lever that switches between fixie/freewheel.

could I put that hub on these bikes. Reason I'm asking is they have these bikes on sale for $299 right now. Seems like a good price for those no?

If the bike is moving, then your legs are moving. Also braking is done by slowing or stopping pedaling.

it's a hippie fad. i've seen many people who can't control a fixie get hit by cars. happens on ULL's campus all the time. i just point and laugh.

i have an SS and it's great, but it's not a fixie.

Yes that's a good deal. I guess. Depends on the parts. Yes you can change out the hub. Dig deeper on the info.its very possible the hubs are flip-flop.

ok cool,I'll direct my attention towards singles.
Any suggestions on a decent single in the $300 range?

fixed gear.

when the wheels are moving, your legs are moving. no way around it.

Whatever you get for God's sake buy a helmet.

2 young healthy people have died here in the last year when they hit a curb and slammed their head into the concrete.

It's not worth it.

That's the "cool" way to ride but there is absolutely nothing stopping someone putting a brake on a fixie. Other than stupidity.

my friend has the trek district S, but it's a more expensive.

i always look at the SS bikes on amazon and most of them have great reviews.

LINK

I'd probably get that one if i were shopping for something on the cheaper side.

Depending on bike culture where you are the best way to find a good single speed is to find someone on Craigslist who builds them.

As they should. It's just stupid to ride without a break for the sake of being cool. I was just saying that is not really a functional difference between single speed and fixie. It is a choice people make with fixies.
