Since everybody likes to compare the two due to the youth on defense, experience on offense and the tough(er) schedule, let's see how they stack up.

Offense

QB - I give the advantage to 2013. Let's face it. Mett didn't exactly set the world on fire last season, but maybe set the bar too high for him. He definitely improved as the season went on though and he has all of the tools to be successful. If he plays like Lee did for us in 2011 this team has very good chance at playing in Pasadena.

RB - The advantage goes to 2013. Jeremy Hill and Alfred Blue are probably the best duo of RBs in college football. Okay that co an exaggeration but they are really damn good. This group could be really special especially if Hilliard returns to 2011 form.

WR - Not really sure who to give the advantage to in this category. If Leslie qualifies then advantage 2013. Leslie gives this offense an immediate deep threat and Landry is a grown arse man out there. If OBJ gets rid of the dropsies then this group just got that much better.

OL - The advantage goes to 2013. This group will without a doubt be one of the top OLs in college football IMO. With Collins guarding Mett's blindside and Bull and Dozer on the other side, this OL is solid from top to bottom. I attribute their struggles last year to our change in offensive philosophy from a heavy rushing offense to a more balanced attack. The only question may be at C but I think Porter will hold down that spot very well.

TE - This is a push unless Gordon or Dickson steps up as a receiving threat and becomes a reliable target for Mett. In 2011 the TEs were nothing more than extra linemen.

Defense

DL - I'm going to call this a push for now. Both are/were unproven. IMO this DL has the potential to be better than the 2011 DL, but if this DL produces similarly to the 2011 DL I can't not see us in Pasadena come January.

LBs - The 2013 squad has the advantage and it's not even close. Our defensive stats in 2011 don't reflect how bad our LB play was. This LB corps in 2013 is infinitely more talented than 2011.

DBs - 2011 has the advantage. TM7, Claiborne and Reid solidified that 2011 defense. Now this is not to say that the 2013 secondary is talented in its own right. Jalen Mills was a Freshman AA and Jalen Collins outplayed Simon numerous times last season. Martin played very well too when he got his opportunities and could prove to be a better coverage safety than Reid. Loston will have to step up and be the leader of the secondary. He came on strong towards the end of the year and could be All-SEC next season.

Agree? Disagree? GFY? TL;DR

I know. I know. "It's baseball season! GFY!"

DL you have to give the edge to 2011, and I'm not sure its close. Sure, preseason we didn't know how good guys like Brockers and Logan were, but Brockers ended up being an absolute terror in the middle, and Logan wasn't half bad himself. Our depth at DE (Adams/Mingo/Montgomery/Edwards) was special in 2011. Just too many unknowns at the DE position as of this point for 2013.

I think you are being a little biased towards the 2013 team. We may never have a season like 2011. Its normal to hope but not think it will be better than 2011. With that being said I pray you are correct. Would love to beat Bama at their house.

I'm really excited about this 2013 team as well, and I think Hunter and Rascoe will be legit...

Myself and everyone I ever talked to before the 2011 season thought 2012 was gonna be our year, just based on the roster and the youth of the team. How strongly we performed in 2011 was kind of shocking because of the team being largely underclassmen. So, considering this 2013 team looks a lot like 2011 did (lots of question marks, youth, and unproven talent), I would not be shocked to see a very similar performance, i.e., lots of up-and-comers trying to make names for themselves

You left out the most important part of 2013's decisive advantage...........A COMPETENT AND PROVEN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR.

GAME/SET/MATCH

Special teams will prob go to 2011. Of course neither kicker was as good last year, but they were awesome in 2011.

As much as I hate using all caps, I gotta agree with this statement.

And to the OP, if AJ90 lives up to his talent this season and ego keeps improving in the offseason, then the DT's could very well be as good as 2011.

However, it's hard to get better at the DE position with Montgomery and mingo. Don't get me wrong though, I'm confident in this year's D-line and I'm sure they'll do great.

I seem to remember thinking that we would pretty solid coming into the 2011 season. Only real question mark I had was at QB, and that was proven to take care of itself early on.

That team played with heart and a real passion. I hope the same for this '13 group.

D-Line is the only group I'm worried about. I see no drop-off at other positions

Don't act like people here know anything about anything.

LSU was #4 preseason.

Rant pre 2011 season

"Were so young on defense, and our offense and quarterback sucks. Our schedule is just too hard to compete this year."

Sound familiar?
