I really don't see a tech board having more activity than a fitness board.

I don't see why anyone would be opposed to it. I just don't see it generating much traffic.

Because I want the off topic lounge to actually have some off topic discussion and not just a board for a gmt, lunch or lnst?

Doubtful, given the general popularity of tech topics on the site.

Now THAT's how you ask for a new board.

Can you also analyze the music board? It seems that one has difficulty maintaining its own status - I think it could be merged with the movie/tv board

And I would much rather see a fitness board as opposed to a tech board IMO

We can measure the activity of the Music Board relative to other boards (well, we have...the results aren't pretty).

Since Music was granted a dedicated place of discussion, we can no longer normalize music threads with tech/science and health/fitness threads. However, I did perform this analysis a few times prior to the introduction of the Music Board, with the results showing that music threads were consistently generated in smaller amounts on the OT in comparison to tech/science and health/fitness threads. The link to those data can be found in the OP.

These aren't niche topics that appeal to small groups of people (Fantasy Sports, Hornets, Gaming).

cater to a specific, niche group or person (Gaming Board, Soccer Board).

I think one of the reasons these boards were split off is because of the huge negative reaction from people who weren't part of those niche groups when the topics were discussed on general boards.

As you say, most people are interested in technology or fitness, which keeps the discussion of those topics (fairly) civil when discussed on the OT.

Politics, movies/TV, and "outdoors" are fairly large topics of discussion that don't cater to niche groups - yet, each of these topics has a dedicated place of discussion. Discussion on the Outdoors Board is fairly cordial relative to some of the discussions that take place on Political Talk.

So, niche topic or not, polarized dicussions or not...there certainly doesn't seem to be a common denominator among the current message boards.

The data in the OP looked at threads created between the dates of 3/25/2013 and 4/1/2013.

Below is the data for the past week, specifically from 4/2/2013 - 4/9/2013. The general trend was the same - there were significantly more threads related to technology than there were for health/fitness.

There was actually a substantial increase in the amount of tech/science and health/fitness threads when compared to the prior week. However, the differential between the amount of tech and health/fitness threads increased slightly, as can be viewed below.

Plenty. There are technically an infinite amount of topics that could be discussed.

The OT has been continually diluted for the past decade, yet, it is still the most popular board in terms of activity (by quite a large margin).

Threads pertaining to technology seem to make up only 6%-8% of the threads on the OT in any given week. This is impressive, considering, again, that this is a board where one could post a thread pertaining to almost any subject.
