Last season sucked balls ...

I know we have been through a lot of them before the SP era but seriously last season hurt. Yea I guess the Superbowl and actually winning most of our games has spoiled me but I think that is a good thing. NOTHING BETTER THAN WAKING UP SUNDAY MORNING EXPECTING TO WIN! Amirite?

Had to get that off my chest because I enjoy talking shop with you gents.

I always tell my buddies how pissed I am that we had to go through a completely wasted season because of Goodell and his bullshite

The biggest thing that separates last year from the record-setting 2011 season is this...

Bring back Excalibur, we kill the Falcons.

re: Last season sucked balls ...

I think last season settled the question: If you had to choose, would you rather watch a great defense with a bad offense... or watch a great offense with a bad defense?

I mistakenly used to think that since defense wins championships, that I'd prefer our dominant Dome Patrol saddled down with an incompetent OC like Carl Smith... as opposed to having a Dan Marino stats machine shackled down with a defense that couldn't stop a HS offense.

Neither scenario produces a winning team, but at least our team last year, with the worst defense in NFL history, produced a shitload of watchable thrillers, and we were in every game outside of a handful of duds.

Watching the Dome Patrol work so hard, drive after drive, to keep us in the game, only to see Carl Smith's predictable & boring offense contribute FG's, punts, Int's, 3&9 off tackle calls, or 3&9 incompletions was like a slow punch in the gut.

I expect to win every Sunday. However, if we lose, I don't become less of a fan. Some people don't understand this thinking.

It would sort of explain why the Herbstreit's of the world would always seem to gravitate to the "pretty teams" with allegedly high-powered offenses like USC, Oklahoma, or Texas, etc.. as their preseason #1 favorites.

Despite the SEC's 8-year defensive domination, hacks like Herbstriet still made the pre-season pick of FSU to beat USC in the 2012 NCG.

Despite the level of competition, there's a subconscious bias to favor offenses that are watchable. Hell, even in the NFL, our 7-9 Saints got on TV more than our 12-4 Dome Patrol team ever did.

Honestly i love big defenses. I look forward to the Ravens v. Steelers game every year. It's awesome watching the oline v. dline battles. Corners v. Receivers. Linebackers v. Running backs. Watching two high powered offenses rape the opposing defenses is not that entertaining to me.

I like watching teams like the Saints, Patriots, Broncos and Packers because there's really nothing like watching a great QB. It's the coolest thing to watch in sports IMO.

I do love watching good physical defense as well though.

You're describing great defenses with competent offenses. That's winning & watchable football.

I'm talking (Saints) teams with polar opposite units. (Not necessarily facing other equally bipolar teams in a certain matchup.)

The 2011 Saints could play a good San Fran team and the Saints' offense could score 32 points but the defense was so horrific we could lose in the final :40 seconds 32-36. Our unstoppable offense made that game watchable at the time because it kept hope & drama alive. (Our defense made that game forever un-re-watchable.)

Whereas, when the (8-8) Saints played San Fran in 90, you knew from the first quarter that the Saints' incompetent OC Carl Smith & Fourcade would indirectly tire out the Dome Patrol and San Fran would outscore us, which they did in a very boring loss 12-13. It wasn't watchable at the time nor re-watchable now.

There was also 3 special teams TO's in that game.

You don't win a game with the amount of turnovers we had there. Defense did not lose us that game.

They certainly did at the end. The offense had it's share of screw ups, but then again, that niner defense was hitting so hard, it's almost hard to fault them. But the offense roared back and took over the game at the end, and our wet paper towel D made the niner offense look like the greatest show on turf. Absolutely no excuse allowing that big pass play on the last drive. When the team needed them, they looked pop warner.

Despite the turnovers, the offense had the game won. There is no excuse for allowing Alex fricking Smith to drive the field like that, and certainly no excuse for leaving Vernon Davis THAT open.

The 2011 divisional round still haunts my dreams. That team was better than 09. A win in that game and Brees' legacy/the Saints are talked about as one of the best ever with 2 Superbowls in 3 years.

I'm not one to let stuff like that linger with me anymore, but that game against San Fran still gets to me.

It's a lot different when your team has, you know, actually won it before.
