University of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware underwent successful surgery Sunday night to repair the gruesome open fracture of his right tibia he suffered during the Cardinals' 85-63 win over Duke in the Midwest Regional final, and he is expected to remain in Indianapolis until at least Tuesday, U of L announced.

Ware had the bone reset, and a rod was inserted into leg during the operation that lasted about two hours. The wound caused by the bone puncturing through his skin in his lower leg was closed.

U of L's late-night release said no timetable for recovery has been set, but the early prognosis from U of L sports medicine director Fred Hina - given right after the game while Ware was in surgery - was that Ware is bound for a lengthy recovery, but the injury is not likely a career-ending one.

I broke my fibula in 14ish pieces (simple, not compound) and that was the absolute worst pain I've ever had, my teeth were literally rattling it hurt so badly for days.

I can't even imaging a compound tibia fracture.

I didn't watch the game I was taking a nap, but I refuse to watch the video, just brings back terrible memories

Get well soon, brotha!

Yeah... I'd probably be afraid to jump anymore after that.

I was amazed at how calm he was. He just put his hands behind his head and leaned back. I remember that look of shock Lattimore had once they removed his helmet, and kept thinking it hasn't hit Ware yet.

Yeah, I imagine his body was in shock. I bet he redshirts next year. Hope he is back and healthy for the 2014-15 season.

Possibly good for Louisville in the long run?

Yeah, I'm sure adreniline kicked in.

I broken both of the bones in my arm my freshman year playing basketball and I was in tears and I thought my athletic career was over.

Senior year playing football I broke my fibula, and I just kept saying "I just broke my fricking leg" in a relatively calm way

But the hot assistant trainer kept rubbing my (6pack)abs, that helped a lot

It's gonna take about a year to come back from this I would assume. So I think that's pretty much a forgone conclusion.

Tibia is weight bearing, it's a very serious injury.

Even if he doesn't play again, this is very good news. A lot could've gone wrong with that type of injury.

I never want to see that play again. Hope he makes a full recovery, even if it's a lengthy one.

I don't want to see this play, but was it worse than that WR that was playing in a MAC game or something and ran into a band cart right off the field and snapped his leg?

If anyone remembers that.
