Shyv isn't meant to played middle. She is more of a top lane or jungle champion.
I'll see if I can find a straightforward list of some sort that can guide you as to what champs go to what lanes.
ETA: Peruse this list. It's from 2012, so there are some inaccuracies, but for the most part it gives you a general idea as a beginner as to who goes where and what their role is. (see the first post within the link)

Also see this link as well. I believe this guy is giving his opinion on who is best (and where) in the current patch. He/she updates it every patch.

Again, these aren't set in stone. You can use a lot of champions in obscure roles sometimes (but that's better left until you are more familiar with the game.)

Attack Damage Carry.
As the ADC, your auto attacks are your main source of damage (generally).
Big damage item first, then an attack speed item next, then attack speed boots. After that it depends on the situation.
ADC is my favorite role.

I did a lot better as an ADC - 2 kills and 10 assist, and way less deaths, so I guess that's good

Just focus on farming. You'll be surprised how much gold you get if you get a lot of CS. Just practice on last hitting minions, don't overextend without vision, and don't feed. It's a very fun game. If you haven't done it yet, you can watch the pros as the new season just started recently.
