GOP congressman uses ethnic slur to describe laborers (NBC)

LINK

quote:

"My father had a ranch; we used to have 50-60 wetbacks to pick tomatoes," Young said in an interview with radio station KRBD. He was discussing the number of jobs that have been made irrelevant due to advances in automation.

Still haven't seen their article on representative Mitchell. I'm sure it will be out soon.

Well hopefully he resigns or is voted out.

Since he is a Repub, I would bet this happens, unlike the Dem in Alabama who will soon be a hero.

Oh noes! Someone said "wetback"

The horror! This is the
MOST IMPORTANT issue of the day. Deficit-- doesn't matter. Debt-- doesn't matter. Economy-- doesn't matter. We need to focus one this ONE WORD uttered by a congressman.

Admittedly, the dude quoted in the OP has got to be an F'n idiot. I mean WTF? How can one be a politician and not be aware enough to know that statement was a bad idea?

I mean, don't get me wrong. Certainly, there are perfectly decent people on the planet who grew up with the term wetback. But for frick's sake. On tape!!!?????

Reminds me of some older folks I used to know. They've long since passed but they would just use n****r in casual conversation. It was just the word they used instead of black person/people. I remember asking them why they use that word and they would reply "They ain't german, are they?"

Same guy who once described gays as "butt frickers" to a group of high school kids.

Young is a work or art, old school, under another ethics investigation. He totally lacks social skills but keeps power by pandering to unions and native groups, as well as social conservatives. He has worn western shirts with a bolo, and his name embroidered on the pocket every time I have seen him in JNU.

It seems pretty harmless, but it sounds so vulgar.

The GOP really needs to cull some of these dudes. One careless observation, much less calling Mexicans wetbacks, and the media is gonna jump all over it.

He keeps getting elected by wide margins, not a whole lot they can do.

Why was I scolded by the admins for using that term when now no one is being riled by it?

Whatever happened to the old saying "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" ?

We live in a world full of pussies.

Young has been saying this kind of stuff for years. Thing is, most hispanics who jumped the border will not be offended, it's the white folk who lean far left who will be.

This is another example of an unlevel playing field that the GOP has to compete on.

DEMs can say anything without effect. The entire population of Republicans can be branded by one untoward remark by someone identified with the party.

Sure - it was a stupid thing to say. But what was the context of the statement? Was the context degrading? or was it a simple slip of the tongue back to earlier times when all kinds of 'colorful' words were used.

I grew up in such a culture. I heard the n-word regularly, with no degrading intent - just a description which was congruent to 'colored' - Then the blacks wanted to be called black, and I immediately adjusted. Now they want to be called "african american" which I refuse to utter in normal conversation.

I saw a NatGeo program a while back where the narrator referred to some ancient inhabitants of sub-Saharan Africa as "african americans."

What a crock of chit.

A true conservative, and a true humanitarian, would not make such a statement even if for political reasons. However, being around liberals or dems in my early years, a comment like that was normal.
