A way to save money here on the 280x is to grab one of these used ones from ebay and save close to $100:

I also have an HIS 280x that I'd be willing to part with for $190 shipped (about the same price that HIS linked above is going for. Except you'd be supporting a good cause.) Reference design, dual bios, good cooler, overclocks pretty well. However, you may want to just buy new if the AMD Gold game offer is appealing to you.

As far as OS goes I think I'm going to go with Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit.

What would you recommend for anti-virus software?

Alright. Stupid question time. I am about to purchase parts on Newegg and I want to use my debit card and don't see the option for one. So....?

Visa? MasterCard? Same place you'd enter any credit card number, right? I've used my debit card (VISA) a few times there. They also take paypal and bitcoin.

If your debit card has a VISA or MasterCard logo on it you just use it like a credit card.

How long does it take to process orders? The speakers I bought were processed immediately and are packaging now but my screen is still showing as "order verification"

I don't know. I wouldn't expect it to ship til Monday. Sometimes they like to verify new card numbers. If you ordered the entire part list from them, expect it to likely be shipped from multiple locations -- TN, CA, and NJ. TN warehouse is the jackpot warehouse, because it's overnight to BR even with ground shipping. NJ sucks (3-4 days), and ground from CA is the worst.

That makes sense. I've never bought anything from them before now. No rush anyway. If they have to call and verify with the bank my information, that's fine.

Monitor is coming from there.

frick. Have some from there.

It's inevitable that something will come from CA, something that largely prevents any progress on the build being made until it arrives. Like the case or motherboard.

So I was reading AMD's FAQ about Project Freesync today, and the answer to one of the questions took me by surprise: "What AMD Radeon™ GPUs are compatible with Project FreeSync?"

quote:

Project FreeSync will utilize DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync protocols to enable dynamic refresh rates for video playback, gaming and power-saving scenarios.

All AMD Radeon™ graphics cards in the AMD Radeon™ HD 7000, HD 8000, R7 or R9 Series will support Project FreeSync for video playback and power-saving purposes. The AMD Radeon™ R9 295X2, 290X, R9 290, R7 260X and R7 260 GPUs additionally feature updated display controllers that will support dynamic refresh rates during gaming.

AMD APUs codenamed "Kaveri," "Kabini," "Temash," "Beema" and "Mullins" also feature the necessary hardware capabilities to enable dynamic refresh rates for video playback, gaming and power-saving purposes. All products must be connected to a display that supports DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync.

It is our current understanding that the software architecture of select games may not be compatible with dynamic refresh rate technology like Project FreeSync. In these instances, users will be able to toggle the activation of FreeSync in the AMD Catalyst™? driver.

So if it requires something specific to GPU architecture, I wonder where that leaves NVidia cards. And that kind of sucks for people running perfectly good Tahiti and Pitcairn cards.

NVidia and AMD have been having a non-confrontational catfight on the MaximumPC podcasts in June and July.

I swear you had that exact build a year ago. I know you at least had a 4770k at some point, and crossfire 7950s another time. Full circle, except with an array of SSDs now.
