Oh, you're UPS guy talks to you? If I had ordered that case, I'd just hear "POW!" indicating that the case has been slung on my front porch, followed way too closely by the sound of the truck driving away.

well we receive UPS deliveries basically every day, and i used to be in logistics. we also order an eyebrow raising level of ammunition that is always delivered UPS. that makes for fun conversations.

Hahaha, yeah the first case I built came just like that. I wasn't sure if I heard something being slammed on the porch, but sure enough there was my case box.

I've got a general question for you guys. How many of you choose to upgrade by component, video card here, ram there, vs. using your system until it's at the end of its life and then investing in a completely new system?

I've generally done the latter, although both cases were primarily a result of computers failing thus requiring a complete replacement. Still, I tend to favor using a system as long as I can and then just moving onto a new one, but I'm lazy and don't like working on my computer so that may have something to do with it.

Other than for other people or as "side builds," I can't remember the last time I've built a computer for myself from scratch. I upgrade things over the months/years. Now, granted, my PC 3 years from now may not contain any of the same parts it has today, but likely through iterative upgrades. I just upgraded my video cards to crossfire 7970s. Next upgrade will likely be a big one -- a shift to Haswell, and probably an upgrade of my memory and PSU, so I'll be dropping some big money on a 1200w PSU, 16-32GB of performance RAM, new CPU, and new motherboard.

Then I guess the next thing will be yet another video card upgrade next year.

I just built in august so I don't see myself changing a lot of stuff for a while. For instance, my ram is samsung and is as good as any other 2133 rated ram. No need to change that especially with my mobo and cpu as is. I did change myu gpu from a 670 to a 7970 only because i wanted more vram to go to 1440. Do not plan on water cooling any of my components at this point as I do not have a ton of disposable income or time. Will skip the haswell upgrade and wait until another cycle before considering an upgrade of cpu and mobo. I have built a really strong system and will not completely rebuild until I start having some major issues with performance.

I have a 2500k, ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen 3 Mobo, 8 gigs of Ram, and an OC GTX 570 from a build back in 2011. I find that I can run Far Cry 3, Crysis 3, Bioshock: Infinite, etc at Very High/Ultra settings just fine for the most part. I think it must be my inability to discern the difference between 60FPS and 30FPS.

as long as you don't notice a difference i wouldn't make major changes. If you start seeing slowdowns I might upgrade your gpu. otherwise, your setup is fine for 1080p gaming.

I have 1 stick of 8gb ram that runs at 1600 with 10 latency. Is that worth upgrading at some point or just not really worth it? I would have gone 2 x 4 but mine was free with mobo.

Haswell intergreated graphics upgrade
I realize we all use dedicated graphics but I still find it interesting how far Intel has taken their graphics the last couple of releases.

I do a "modern" build every 2-3 years. Mostly because I enjoy doing the research and the actual building of the PC. The only upgrading I'll do in the interim is storage or displays.

maybe Intel sees the success of the APU and feels like challenging that market. I think I'd rebrand the Pentiums or something given the general low price point of the APUs.

My mobo and H60 come in today. And wouldnt you know it, THIS goes on shell shocker sale today at noon central

Any of you folks with a H60 or similar closed WC unit... do you set the fan to intake or exhaust? The book recommends to set as intake but ive already got two 140s for intake in the front and was thinking of using the H60 fan as exhaust.
