No sweat, you saved me from buying what would have been useless to me. Just waiting to mid September after my bonus to pay off my credit then I'm going full press on getting my limit raised.

That 8 GB memory module is nice but I'm thinking of going with the 16 GB version of it. I've always had problems with virtual memory when playing total war games so I may want to go
Overboard.

8 gb is plenty for gaming. If I was looking for something at best buy I would offer to trade but not yet. I need a new tv but I need the money for it.

As far as the bios goes, from what I've read the 970 chipset is mostly the same, right? The difference seems to be in how much the VRMs can handle, not what the bios can do. This is not the same as comparing Intel chipsets, as the Z chipsets are the only ones that actually allow you to fully take advantage of an unlocked chip, from a bios standpoint. It's just disabled in other chipsets, because Intel doesn't want people spending less money on motherboards and still be able to overclock, and likely spend less on a CPU since you'd be able to get acceptable performance from a budget board and a budget CPU through overclocking. (and slightly off topic, I honestly think that part of the reason the mainstream socket Intel chips are getting hotter is intentional, to reduce OC performance and protect Intel's enthusiast/extreme revenue stream)

It looks like all of the 970 motherboards have 4+1 phase designs, with the exception of Gigabyte's UD3. As far as I can tell, the only difference between Gigabyte's 970 UD3 and and the 990FX UD3 is that the 970 allows for PCI-E 2.0 x8/x8 crossfire/SLI, and the 990FX has the extra PCI-E lanes for x16/x16. In addition, the 990FX has perhaps a negligibly higher HT frequency. Spec for spec, nothing else seems different on the surface, and I'm not sure what, if anything, would cause the chips to behave differently on the two boards -- unless the VRMs are of lower quality on their 970. I can't imagine that to be the case on the same brand of motherboard with a $5 price difference, though. The VRM cooling seems the same as well.

There seems to be more of a disparity with ASRock's boards. With a price difference of about $30, the 970 and 990FX extreme3's both have the same power phase design and similar specs, with the biggest difference being that the 970 extreme3 can only do a x16/x4, so SLI/crossfiring is not really feasible.

And I'm still left wondering, if you were to use a 95W 6-core Piledriver chip like the 6300, would there would be absolutely any overclocking performance difference between 970 and 990FX boards that both support a 125w TDP CPU and use the same voltage regular circuit design with 4+1 phases.

Sorry I dropped the ball on putting the best buy build together for you.

I don't recall ever seeing you finish a build for someone here

You always start and say "I will finish it later" or "I am still researching it for you" then someone else steps in and knocks it out in 10 minutes and you are like "that looks good just go with what they said"

Just like a corporate upper management type...stall until someone else does the work for you.

Z77 and especially Z87 are leaps and bounds ahead of 990FX in features.

I have read up on numerous boards and many of them upper 990 boards have the same features. Especially when comparing say an Extreme9 AM3+ vs Extreme9 z87 or Sabertooth vs Sabertooth.

Ha it's not on purpose. Often times I am on my phone or ipad then by the time I get to my pc ilikelsutoo already did it plus he knows more than me
I completely forgot on this one and have been very busy at work. Your point is true though.

Yeah you can overclock and it be stable without vrm overheating. My 955 was 125w TDP and I had it overclocked from stock 3.2 to a P95 for 8 hours stable 4.2@1.48v. It ran everyday like that till I upgraded to the 8350. Most AMD chips are I overvolted from the factory(there a whole niche group that like undervolting that figured it out. Usually you can push around an extra .4ghz out of them without ever touching the voltage. With that said, with my 8350, anything over 1.4v is unstable. 970 with a 4+1 just can't handle it for the 8 core.

A 990FX Extreme9 seems to be more comparable to a Z87 Extreme6. They are about the same price.

SATA Ports
990FX Extreme9: 8 x 6Gbps (6 native)
Z87 Extreme6: 10 x 6Gbps (6 native)

Audio Codec
990FX Extreme9: Realtek ALC898
Z87 Extreme6: Realtek ALC1150

Crossfire/SLI support and PCI-E
990FX Extreme9: 2-way SLI/Crossfire would be PCIe 2.0 x16/x16. 3-way would be x16/x8/x8.
Z87 Extreme6: 2-way SLI/Crossfire would be PCIe 3.0 x8/x8. 3-way would be x8/x4/x4.

DDR3 Support
990FX Extreme9: DDR3 2450(OC)/2100(OC)/1600/1333/1066 (Max: 64GB)
Z87 Extreme6: DDR3 2933+(OC)/2800(OC)/2400(OC)/2133(OC)/1866(OC)/1600/1333/1066 (Max: 32)

LAN
990FX Extreme9: Gigabit Intel 82583
Z87 Extreme6: 2 x Gigabit LAN ports (Intel I217V and I211AT)

Rear USB
990FX Extreme9: 4 x USB 3.0; 4 x USB 2.0
Z87 Extreme6: 4 x USB 3.0; 2 x USB 2.0

Power Phases
990FX Extreme9: 14
Z87 Extreme6: 12

The reason I'm looking at all this shite is because I'm wrapping up the motherboard section of the guide, trying to boil down the chipset differences to the most significant ones.

Ok, this is good to know. Basically, for the guide I needed to make sure I was justified in selecting a 970 motherboard to pair with a 6300. The 970 board I selected is roughly $75, supports "ok" crossfire performance at PCI-E 2.0 x8/x8, and supports 125w TDP CPUs. It seemed like a pretty good compromise since the cheapest 990FX board is over $100 and still only has a 4+1 phase design.

Yeah, they're perfectly suitable for mild overclocking. I have the Asrock 970 extreme3, which I got for around $65 on sale. It supports x8/x8 crossfire but it isn't Sli compatible. It's a very serviceable board but those VRMs on my chip don't cut it. I dd take the stock heats ink 92mm fan and used double sides tape to right on top(but not touching) the VRM heatsink. That cut heat quite a bit.

It also supports 140w tdp

Anyone playing tonight?

I forgot to mention that the 970 chipset doesn't support the default HT speed(2600) that the 8350 has. 2400 is the highest. Im on the latest bios too. Only way to reach that speed is by FSB overclocking. I don't know what the HT speed for the 6300 is, so it may not matter.

That looks awesome. I would try to make my itx build look nice, but cable management in those things would ruin it all. Plus there are no side panels or anything

Edit: does anyone know of a wireless/bluetooth keyboard that has a really strong signal strength? I'm running my PC on two different tvs in 2 rooms (so I don't have to move it from room to room), and I need a wireless keyboard that can reach the other room

Yeah, that would be tough. If you could find the correct female connectors, you could measure and cut the cables down to the right size.

I just got the funniest email, ever.

So we do business with a Canadian company who manufactures outdoor wireless systems. We had a unit go bad while under warranty and requested to cross ship a new unit so we could get our customer back up and running. They agreed, on the condition that we pre-pay for the new unit which would be refunded once they received the defective one.

Not ideal, but understandable. We agreed and everything went fine until after examining the PO it seems they charged us shipping as well. Well we had to pay to ship the old unit back, so I dont see why we should pay shipping both ways but when I inquired they said that was standard policy. OK thats $60 down the drain but whatever.

Then after receiving confirmation the old unit was successfully delivered back to the manufacturer, they tried to tell me that they dont offer refunds, only credit. I ended up talking to the owner and he agreed we were owed a refund, even though that wasnt company policy, because thats what we were promised (via email) by his employee. A month goes by and no refund. Call him again, he gives some bullshite excuse about being stretched thin due to a big order yada yada but we say ok and agree to give him some more time. Another month goes by and I say enough and open up a paypal claim. Paypal agrees to take the case even though its beyond their normal limitations because I have saved all the emails back and forth. Paypal awarded us a full refund (including shipping) today.

Not 3 hours after getting that email from paypal and the company's office manager sent us an email requesting payment for the recouped shipping costs!
The fricking nerve of this place is astounding. How should I respond? Fax her a copy of my bare arse?
