Question about spring training and DL

What is the rule regarding roster spots and DL status during spring training? I will give an example...
Liriano is destined to start the season on the DL for the Pirates. I would like to pick him up and stash him on my open DL spot just in case he finally finds it in the NL. The Pirates finalized their roster today, but they still have not placed him on the DL.
Do they have until opening day to place him on the DL, or what is the rule regarding this?
I have always been confused about this rule and thought some here might clarify.

Since he is on their 25-man, they will need officially place him on the DL before opening day if they want someone to take his spot on the 25-man. But I'm not 100% on if they can back date the DL like you do during the season.

That is what I thought as well, but the Pirates made all of their cuts today and set their bench and Liriano is not on the announced 25 man roster and was not added to the DL
