This is why it is a good thing we don't have socialized medicine

If we had socialized medicine, the government would just say out current treatments are good enough and we wouldn't get breakthroughs like this to the treatment stage. LINK

ETA: to make it more clear that socialized medicine countries might fund research but using the drugs is slower. Plus I wanted to post the breakthrough.

Sounds like the government was funding this research. Sarcasm?

So... they 'cured' cancer?

Why isn't this bigger news?

colleague at McMaster's state of the art Tissue Engineering center would take issue with your ignorance

Also, some of the researchers on the project you linked are from Norway and Switzerland.

Government should fund research such as this. It doesn't need to run/fund the point-of-service schemes.

A $20 million dollar grant is peanuts for this kind of research. Plus in most socialized medicine countries get a drug and use it because it is good enough.

Breast cancer drugs such as Herceptin, which can extend the life of women suffering the most advanced forms of the disease, was made available in America in 1998.

They might research it but they don't use what they found. Lst year Sweden found a virus that would eat cancer, but it is more than likely never going to be tested.

Doesn't our government fund a large majority of domestic medical research? NIH funding is tens of billions of dollars a year I believe. Would all of that go away with single payer?

do you think it would?

One of the arguments that is routinely made of the NIH is that it should be defunded have its funding decreased because the government should have no role or a reduced role in medicine.

I don't see why a federally budgeted allocation for health research would go away with a federally provided-for healthcare system.

Neither do I. Single payer might affect pharmaceutical companies if the government wasn't paying them enough for drugs to justify new drug development, or overly relying on old medications.

Research funding isn't what I was talking about in my original post. I guess I should rephrase it. They may have the research but, they don't use them because they are expensive or the red tape is so slow. See one of my other posts where UK took an extra 2 years to apprive a cancer drug and an estimated 5,000 women died.

there's a lot of oversight and inefficiency and, well, glut that comes with R&D and federal administration. I can't see that getting much better, though it would have to.

As for the R&D, a lot of the work on compounds is done in research labs and universities that get federal funding.

And these sites and researchers have said that they don't have the manufacturing capabilities that the private sector has and would rather not take that responsibility on.

There probably would be a hit but the form it would take? I couldn't say. A friend works for GSK's main site here in Canada and they work on some pretty amazing stuff, but I don't know how much of that is subsidized by the Canadian or Ontario system and how much is supported by the UK or other places, more privately.

It would be a bit of a tangle to work out I'd imagine.

But I don't think we'd be entering a medical Dark Ages
