Hope you guys realize that California is no longer going broke. Yeah, it doesn't have a huge $2 billion surplus, that was an accounting error, but there's no doubt that state finances are in much better shape. Why? 4 reasons. 1) believe it or not, but Jerry Brown has made a ton of cuts that if a Republican Governor had tried to implement would've been shot down out of hand. 2) The economy is doing better. Better economy more taxes. Simple as that. 3) Higher taxes, Californians voted to raise taxes on themselves. 4) Budgets can finally be passed. For the longest time, Republicans could hold up any budget because in order to pass a budget, there needed to be a super majority in the legislature. And the Republicans were the party of no. This sounds a little familiar... Well, the Republicans finally got so unpopular they no longer had the numbers to hold up the budget.

Look dude I live here. It may be in slightly better shape than it was two years ago but it's still a crap place to live unless you are a complete establishment democrat.

I can't, for the life of me, fathom how any free minded, independent person could vote for such a thing.

They are going to go broke because of their pension liabilities. Book it. They have done frick all to address that problem. The public sector unions own and run Sacramento. Show me some real pension reform and I might have some hope for California. Until that happens, you, and they, are dreaming.

Could fix their problems tomorrow...start drilling off-shore...do it voluntarily and you keep the money...wait until feds mandate it and get a small part...

I live here too, in the Bay Area. I moved here after college because job prospects are better here than in Louisiana. California isn't perfect, but it's nowhere the socialist hell hole that people on this board make it out to be. I hate the PC correctness out here, don't like the higher taxes, I don't like the micromanagement that the government often feels like it has to impose on us, but at the same time, California, especially the Bay Area feels like it's 10-20 years more modern than Louisiana. I'm no Democrat, but if the Republican party is to survive, it needs to modernize it's outlook and stop living in the 1950's.

Did... did you bring up social issues in a fiscal thread? It's okay if I misunderstood you, just let me know.

actually it is and you are wrong - again. 1. Cali had a huge income tax increase in the last quarter of 2012 - because everyone who could shift income from 2013 to late 2012 did so to avoid the huge tax increase. 2. there is a huge understatement of the teachers retirement deficit. Assuming a 5.5% rate of return (somewhat better than the 0.3% return of the last five years), taxpayers need to come up with $5B/yr for 17 years to make up for the underfunding.

Yeah if only we had that newfangled internet thingy over here. And cell phones, I've always wanted to try one of those.

Yeah because the 50's were soooo terrible. San Fran was a nicer place then than what it's become now.

Yeah, the social extremist on the right are really bad and antiquated. But what's even worse is the Republican party's perception that it's the party of the rich and big business rather than the people. The Republican party should be offering solutions of how people can get off of welfare, cutting taxes for the rich and corporations while cutting benefits doesn't help people. Welfare needs to be reformed, but people needs to see a way out of poverty, that's where the Republican party needs to modernize.

How can you tell people to improve the product they are trying to sell (themselves) and put in work without being labeled racist, intolerant, or a WASP? Or do you have another suggestion for people to get off entitlements?

Ok, how about this, shifting some of the money that currently goes to benefits to something that actually helps people work such as affordable day care or better public transportation? Or this, instead of cutting taxes for the rich, how about shifting the cuts to payroll taxes? The poor and middle class spends a much greater portion of their money than the rich which actually helps the economy. There's tons of ideas, and some of them are proposed by Democrats, but right now the Republican party is so entrenched in kneejerk rejection of everything that it's going the way of the dodo.

Money won't fix societal problems, but I could get on board with your payroll tax cuts. When did a democrat suggest pure payroll cuts with no strings? Just curious, genuinely asking. I don't know.

That's the thing no party has been fighting for it, Bush had a temporary one that Obama allowed to elapse, but neither party fought for it. The Republican party should have fought for it, rather than lower taxes for the rich, but they didn't, which is a big reason why the party is in as much trouble as it is.

I see. So Obama letting something good expire is the Republicans fault? Not disagreeing; they should have fought but I'm unsure of the context you're arguing.

I'm saying that both parties let it go. The Republicans could've have fought for it, but they decided to fight tax hikes on the rich instead. It was a golden missed opportunity that could've made the Republicans look more in tune with the middle class but instead just reinforced the notion that the Republicans is just a party of the rich.
