Planned freshwater diversions will doom LA salt fishing

In an effort to spend tax dollars, for the cause of Coastal Restoration, additional Mississippi River diversions will be created. This could be a disaster for LA salt fisheries and likely to cause the opposite of the intended effect. Looks like another case of misguided government. Want to help with giving them push back on this?

Would you recommend losing all of the coast?

The coast did thrive before we bottled it up, didn't it?

Venice and the wax are definitely the worst places to hunt and fish in the state with all their fresh water.

Do something now before we study it some more and have no marsh to speak of.

What would you recommend instead Mr. Deege?

We know that some of these projects will be harmful to fisheries in the short term, but I believe that coastal restoration overall will benefit long term fisheries, but who the hell really knows?

No JimBeam I am not. This is why I think this discussion needs more attention. The more informed I have become on the subject the more I think the diversions will accelerate coastal erosion. Unfortunately, most people buy into the "spend tax dollars hoax".

quote from Ricks "Last night I was invited to the CCA meeting at the Dock in Slidell, and was surprised at the great turnout. I was honored they let me speak and let people know what is going on with the Diversion issues. What amazed me, was that of almost 100 people, only one person was aware of the Master Plan for Coastal Restoration and what it's going to do!! When I informed them of the facts and figures of exactly how much freshwater will be pumped into our beloved saltwater marsh with the scheduled diversion at Braitewaite, you could hear a pin drop!! It was gratifying to have so many come and shake my hand and thank me for what we're doing to get the word out."

As long as there is a sediment load that meets the requirement, freshwater diversions will not hurt rebuilding the coast. Look at the Wax Lake Delta, among others

First I say DO No Harm.

I am leaning toward the "Dredge don't Divert" if anything is to be done. Spoil from dredging can build strategic land ridges to buffer storm surge and contain salt marshland.

Facts that I read from the reports I directed you to indicate that land loss in Caenarvon is greater area that all deltas built by all freshwater diversions.

dredging is very, very expensive. We should not waste spoil, but you don't just drive around in a dredge gathering up sediment. You are digging out a channel, which can actually accelerate coastal erosion.... Not to say that dredging is bad, but dredging alone is not the solution.

I've read more than enough studies showing dredging barely keeps up with the losses. And costs a ton.

As people of LA we have thrived due to channeling the Mississippi. Now we are feeling the impact. We are going to have to sacrifice somewhere.

Probably nothing should be done. If we get the sea level rise that is predicted, any thing built by dredging or diversion, will be submerged.

frick that. My family has been farming within an hour of the coast since before 1900. I want to die on that farm and I plan on living a long time
