Can you explain this a bit more? You're much more tactically astute than I.

I'll take a draw. I just hate that we had a few counters stalled by backward passing or slowing down the pace.

Also, it pissed me off when Jozy Altidore busted his arse on the left wing on a certain play and everyone including Dempsey, just stood there and didn't make a run or help out at all. Once again, we were playing for the draw. But, c'mon, man !

I agree. Jurgen still hasn't taught this team how to counter.

Deuce was nowhere to be found in the box the few times that Jozy had the ball. He also had a head scratcher in the first half when he was around the ball in the box as it was heading towards the back line and instead of hitting it back across goal with his left he tried to step over and trap with his right, didnt do it in time, ball goes out, goal kick.

Look, I hate to keep doing this, b/c I have soured on JK myself to some extent, but COME ON. JK is supposed to teach these professional soccer players to "make a run or help out" when their teammate makes a run down the ring?

It may have been by design that we didn't send more players forward to support, but it's hard to argue with that design when even with so many players back we still got carved up like we did.

In some ways, yes.

BUT, the US was disciplined, organized and actually look like they knew what the frick they were doing.

The frustrating thing is that you can probably count on one hand the number of times you could say that in the last two years.

The last time I recall (not counting the Scotland "scrimmage") was Slovenia.

In both games, we played an empty bucket 4-4-2, and Jermaine Jones' positionally undisciplined, turnover prone arse wasn't on the field.

One could almost suggest those two things are related.

Absolutely - and that is something extremely positive to take away from the match.

Still, a lot of missed opportunities in a match where we got more than we were supposed to.

The substitutions, for one, were absolutely puzzling. You have Beasley on a yellow for 80 minutes and injured for the better part of the second half, but instead opt to bring on 2 left wingers and a striker (who has only played wide for the US) and take off your striker? Lolwut? Was Jurgen drawing names out of a hat or something? Maybe he thought EJ would be a better target man than Jozy? Still, in a match where your defensive players are sucking air, your LB is injured and on a yellow and your star AM is gassed, substituting on 3 wide players and then NOT attacking is odd.

The only reasoning I can see for the O subs is that JK wanted to make sure Mexico had to wait very late to start sending more people forward. If he had gone more defensive and not brought on EJ and then Shea, I think we would have seen more of the match go like the last 5 minutes did.
Also, did we literally not have anybody that has played LB to sub in for Beas?

I don't think Beasley was actually hurt. He had a yellow, but I'd rather take my chances with him than Morrow.

Regarding the substitutions.... Yeah, they didn't make sense, but that falls as much on player selection as anything.

My biggest gripe from last night was having Gomez taking the set pieces, especially with Zusi, Beasley and Bradley on the field. We pissed away a couple opportunities.

I'm not suggesting actually subbing Beasley off - he did well even if he was injured.

I was thinking more along the lines of just giving the back line a little bit more support.

Why not sub Beckerman on for Zusi, Gomez or Dempsey (all 3 impacted the match very little outside of short stretches of play) and push Bradley a bit more forward into a box-to-box role? Bring on Davis or Shea for Altidore and move Gomez to the middle?

You know, subs that might actually work or be beneficial tactically.

I kept saying oh shite. he is done for and he kept going on and on.

Extended leg to kick a ball. Thought he pulled a hammy.

Stopped the ball. Knee extended. thought he messed up his knee...

I don't know what was wrong with his arm/hand. Maybe someone stepped on it?

He has only played a game n half from Tottenham(maybe?) + Costa Rica since his injury. He may have been out of shape ?

ETA: Graham Zusi was absolutely gassed in the 70th minute or so. I thought JK would have taken him off. Thankfully, he had one more play in which he came from no where and disrupted a wide open cross that went out for a corner

I'm like 90% sure that he always appears to be playing lazily, but it doesn't register until things aren't going well for him. I thought that he played reasonably well under the conditions. Most of the time his options were either:

1. Attempt to beat Mexico with help from Jozy.
2. Pull the ball back, slow the game down, and stand around until we lose the ball again.

I felt Dempsey was the main hold up when we tried to build up on Offense.

He was walking up and down the field, only fighting for balls in midfield but never advancing when we had the chance.

His effort is the only one I questioned last night.

this is true, it appeared we were trying to link the back 4 to Bradley to Deuce..

After playing like a warrior in the snow last week, I'll be hesitant to question Dempsey's effort(I've done it before).. but like stated above, last night wasn't laziness or lack of effort. It was the product of not being match fit and playing 2 90+ min games, both at altitude.

Unbelievable hustle play from Zusi
Ik he wasn't perfect last night by any means, but Zusi impressed me with his grit and hustle, he was busting his arse trying to defend out there. I'll take effort like that everytime

Dempsey was ok. The cut back attempt in the box was definitely a head scratcher, and I think he could have done more in pushing forward, but that wasn't the plan.

Gomez and Zusi played as long as they did because of what they offer defensively, which is great hustle and a bit of dirty work.

Not sure why Jozy got taken out. I still want to see Jozy and EJ play up top together.

Also, Sheep, I'm pretty sure we played a 4-2-3-1 and not a 4-4-2 empty bucket.
