On a pure piano skills basis who do you think is better?

Stevie, no doubt.

I know you said purely piano skills, but Stevie is a much better overall musician. The only debate is songwriting, which I'd probably say Elton wins.

Both are great though.

Well Elton did not write his lyrics so I have to give the nod to Stevie on that one. I think Elton gets the nod on piano skills. I agree tho both are great and different!

Interesting debate in which you have to split hairs.

Songwriting? I'll give it to Stevie cause he does it all--Elton had Bernie Taupin. As a team I'd give it to the Brits.

Music? I'd call it a draw. Personally I like Elton John better, but couldn't say he was objectively better. I love many Stevie Wonder songs too.

Pure piano skills? This is just my opinion but I've heard more EJ piano on live albums, etc, whereas SW's keyboards are always more in the mix instead of standing out (and he's on the synthesizer a lot too.) Giving it to EJ.

If I had to pick one to listen to on a desert island I'd have to go with EJ myself.

Based off pure piano skills I give the nod to Elton.

That credit goes to Bernie Taupin.

Yep they would sit in separate rooms while they were writing. I think there was a tribute album to them several years ago called Two Rooms or something like that

I doubt either could cop the other's style effectively. That said Stevie all day. Elton was an incredible musician but Stevie was a once in a generation type freak of nature.

The only thing I'd give Elton over Stevie is showmanship.

Saw Elton Friday night in Montgomery. He wasnt nearly as flashy a showman as I grew up thinking he was.

It was good. Elton was bucket list for me, and I enjoyed it, played all the hits but a few. You'll see a bunch of old folks and he seemed genuinely glad to still be playing. Setlist is out there somewhere on the webs.

Yep, not exactly a fair statement considering that he's been doing this since the late 1960's.

Here he was in his heyday, 1980, at a concert in Central Park in front of a cajillion people, dressed like...a duck.

Lyrics sure, but the music is Elton.

I think Elton is a better pianist, but Stevie could just about do it all.

Music is hard for me to pick, I love them both so much.

I think Elton John has said in an interview that he can't touch the genius of Stevie Wonder on the piano.

eta: Don't diminish Elton's songwriting skills because Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics. Songs are nothing without melody... good ones, of which Elton has had plenty, are hard to produce. Lyrics are cheap. I could spit some out right now, but I sure as hell can't write music.
