If something was truly upsetting, horrible, tasteless, poor, disgusting, foul, and not worth it, get a fricking manager next time.

The guy had a shitty meal at a clearly overrated restaurant, who are you to tell him how to handle whether he chooses to speak with the management. Sorry you've enjoyed cheap beer an burgers with barbecue sauce there, but that doesn't mean shite when it comes to a diner who doesn't feel like dealing with management.

Mason's a mediocre neighborhood joint

Super happy hour. You can drink for 2 hours at Mason's and they'll end up owing you money...A dozen raw with some of their delicious onion rings, and maybe one of their Cuban sandwiches occasionally...The broiled oysters are exactly how the OP described, but for some reason I enjoy a 1/2 dz of the broiled to compliment my dz raw sometimes...That's about it for me and Mason's food.

I always go to the bar area at Mason's because I like to be close to the liquor....And the bar staff does seem to have a problem not only being attentive, but actually being behind the bar waiting to serve you. Plus they stand at the register with their backs turn to you and are oblivious to customers. So you have to sometimes yell/cuss at them to get more liquor.

Mason's needs:

Updated restrooms-- men's room is ridiculous
A AC that can keep up in the summer
A new ceiling that's not disgusting
A cook that can make most of their menu items tasty
Employees that don't have a deer in the headlights look

Also, with the new Woman's Hospital nuclear power plant right next door to Mason's, my pee color is now fluorescent goldenrod.

I like Mason's, for a few things only. It is an OK sandwich joint for poboys and a cup of gumbo, if you push them past that point, steaks or actual dishes, it falls flat. The service at busy times can't keep up, glasses don't get refills, it can take a while to get a check.

I have had some very good oyster & shrimp poboys. I will never go to that 'brunch', I pass by and see cars parked across the street and shake my head. I've heard they pour a lot of cheap champagne so that attracts a 'Mothers Day-like' crowd.

Anywhere I can go for happy hour and drink $2.50 Makers is alright with me.

I've never heard anybody say this is the best restaurant in the city and I've also never had any bad experiences there like some of you have said.

A-plus everytime we go.

Don't know what to tell you other than maybe it's just you.

I do agree with the bathroom and AC suggestions though.. been like that since theyve been open.

Yeah I'm not sure where all these "rave reviews" people are mentioning come from, but I read this board pretty regularly and "rave reviews", and a "BR destination restaurant" would be new terms for me when discussing Mason's.

I've done there happy hour quite often and ordered a good bit of the menu. Food is mediocre. I don't think I know anybody who claims the food is any better than average except the burger. People enjoy the sweet bun and a char-grilled burger. Nothing wrong with that at all.

They have the best drink specials in town. That's a major draw.

I was there at the same time Saturday. Got there maybe 15 minutes earlier and had no wait. Food came out hot and the service was ok. The only thing that bothered me was the waiter bringing our bill while both is were still eating. He also had just been given a big table so I just figured he was trying to get us taken care of before he got caught up with them.

I've been once. Don't remember anything about the food, but I remember we found the bottom of the bottomless champagne.

I have never done the brunch there, but have had eatten there often.

Before I discovered the bar area at Mason's, we went to try the brunch one Sunday. We were seated next to the live music which was ridiculously loud & annoying so we walked out.

Another place that gets love on here and I can't understand why?

JOTB is tiny place with an incredibly large menu. They serve everything, and everything is extremely meh to not good at all IMO.

crab cakes---very meh
crawfish etouffee---horrible
red beans & rice---tasted stale and the sausage was too chewy
pasta dishes---very meh
their famous rocket shrimp---it's ok, but it's over-hyped.

Here's their huge menu, what do I need to order?

Jasmine's menu

People, get bad reviews because they earned them, and a bad review can be much more helpful than a bunch of fluff nonsense if a restaurant cares to see it as helpful.

Careful Mike, this kind of attitude will get you a lot of responses like:

"Dude, you must be a miserable frick IRL."

"Why do you have to shite on everything? Stop being a fricking snob about anything and everything mentioned on here."

Been there a couple of times. Food was not bad but not great either, certainly not somewhere I would wait more than 10 minutes to sit. Menu is also too big, too many items to look through.

The first time I went the Cajun Shrimp Burger blew me away. The last two times it was solidly meh.
All three times the service was horrific, and glacially slow.
Expensive for what it is too.

Seems like we have a theme.

Very true....Mason's does seem to have lots of customers. I don't know if that translates to the owner making tons-o-money and not putting anything back into the biz to keep it updated, or whether it means he's just doing ok and is able to pay his staff & bills.

IDK squat about running a successful restaurant other than what Chef Robert Irvine has taught me

I got called a sociopath and a miserable frick IRL on the SECrt because I posted that I told my wife I would not go with her to meet her parents at the A-Day game in Tuscaloosa. I told her that she was welcome to go without me. I'm not driving 10 hours round trip and going to that stadium to watch Bama play Bama in a spring scrimmage.

Back to the topic: I've been to Mason's a few times. "Never had a bad meal there" but it is not a place that the wife and I go to regularly. The times we have gone there was to meet friends. It's a very average restaurant IMO.

Every time that show comes on, it's like a train wreck. I can't turn away. I was up until after 1AM the other night watching a marathon of them.

As far as Mason's, it's too far of a drive for me when I have a similar type place in Sammy's close by. And Sammy's is better. I do like the concept of Mason's Bloody Mary though. Wish more people would do that. Sammy's makes a terrible Bloody Mary. And they have a shitty beer menu.
