codeine addiction here he comes, I honestly hope this doesn't result in chronic back pain/problems for him but it probably will.

What I read just said it was a "compression of vertebrae". Idk much about the terminology but that doesn't sound like a broken back

ETA: Nvm I read the link

damn. sounds painful and I have no idea what that even means

I don't follow NASCAR but they don't have anything else on the inside beside a concrete wall that could help soften the blow?

He hit that shite head on probably going 100 mph or whatever, even though he had obviously slammed on the breaks

The story I linked says compression fracture. Whatever the hell that is.

6-7 years ago they developed something known as a "SAFER Barrier" (SAFER is an acronym for something). Anyhow it involves a separate softer wall that is cushioned by styrofoam. It's on every tracks outside walls and a lot of the inside walls. They claim it has helped soften the impacts tremendously but Hamlin hit the inside wall yesterday and I'm not sure if the safer barrier was installed there or not

Bad thing for Hamlin is he has had back problems for the past 2 years (bulging disks and back spasms). This is the worse kind of injury for him. I can't see him not missing some races due to this. Good news for all you Elliot Sadler fans (if you still exist)

I see. From what I read, it was concrete and nothing else. His car looked like an accordion

SAFER = Steel And Foam Energy Reduction

A wall of steel tubing about 3 feet offset from the concrete wall, with wedge shaped chunks of an energy absorbing foam placed every 20-24 inches apart sitting between the steel and concrete walls.

Where the 11 hit yesterday was strictly concrete, no SAFER Barrier in front of it.

If you've ever looked at the cross-section of a piece of cardboard, the SAFER barrier works on the same principle.

It wasn't on the inside wall, which the track is taking alot of grief for now. It costs a nice chunk of change to install these, but every track needs to install them on all "hittable" walls.

"Mike, were you really sick this week? What was the problem."

Mike: "I broke my back.................. My back is broken."

"What do you mean by that... a vertabrae or...."

Mike: "Nah.. spinal".
