Read an article talking about possibly playing five at the back

Proposed Starting XI vs. Mexico (5-4-1): GK Guzan – LB DaMarcus Beasley, LCB Geoff Cameron, CB Maurice Edu, RCB Omar Gonzalez, RB Tony Beltran – LCM Michael Bradley, CM Kyle Beckerman, ACM Clint Dempsey, RCM Herculez Gomez – FW Jozy Altidore

What say the SB?

Jurgy was talking shite about attacking Mexico recently. We may give up 6 goals if that is the case.

If we go toe to toe with Mexico its gonna be a lot like the Gold Cup final...only I dont think we get 2 goals

5 at the back? what the god damn.

We're probably MORE likely to give up a goal playing that kind of shite just on set pieces etc.

I dont necessarily agree but I see the merit in it. Tomorrows lineup might by Jurgens most interesting to date.

Instead of a 5 man back, I would feel better with Edu either at CB or as a pure DM for cover, but if he’s DM that means he does not go up at all.

I honestly think our best bet is a 4-1-2-1-2 (diamond midfield) with the same back four, minus Goodson, plus Edu. Then Bradley covering in front of the defense and Dempsey in the hole. Not sure who plays the wings though. Jozy and Gomez/EJ up top.

Maybe Sacha and Corona/Shea can be useful too.

I agree with the Diamond midfield. I would do something like

-------Gomez-Altidore-------
---------Dempsey---------
-----Corona-----------Zusi-----
----------Bradley-----------
Beasley-Edu-Cameron-Beltran

I like Shea as a sub for Corona.

I think Friday's 4-2-3-1 was fine honestly. Not the BEST lineup up front I don't think but it seems to work.

Edu as the CDM (bradley's role friday) Bradley in Jones's role as the box to box. Demps as the CAM (just a LITTLE worried about him doing two 90 minutes in high altitude coming back from an injury) with Altidore up top and some stupid combination of terrible wingers as the other two spots.

Ives thinks Sacha is gonna take Jones' position from what Jurgen said today. Also the team already knows what the lineup is tomorrow so they won't be completely surprised tomorrow.

hope that is true, it's about time Klejstan was given another chance.

Ok, Mexico is not spain or argentina. Calm the frick down.

How many times have gotten blown out by Mex. lately. not many.

We don't need 5 in the back. However, we better not put 3 up top. too week in the middle.

And I'll quote my first response to the Straus article from last week:

quote:

One U.S. regular, when asked how frequently Klinsmann deploys a lineup or formation that wasn’t practiced before the game, answered “70/30.”

Just play a fricking 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 that all the players are used to, and get on with it.

They are pretty damn good, though.

I agree with this Bleacher Report article that we should start Corona. Corona is a must-start
USMNT experience aside, I would think he would be as comfortable as anyone on the team in Azteca.

We need wingers, this guy is young and plays as a winger in Mexico. Seems like a no-brainer to me given our likely chances of getting points there with so many injuries.

Replace Goodson with Edu, put Bradley in front of the back 4.
Corona, Dempsey, Zusi
Jozy, Herc

I wouldn't be surprised to see another more defensive-minded midfielder, though. Beas was great against Costa Rica, but that was one game in wacky conditions. I wouldn't blame JK for wanting to give him some more cover.

that'd be nice if true, I think Sacha and Bradley could pair well together in the midfield. Who is better going forward though? and who would be the box to box?

I'd want to see this 4-4-2 tomm. Herc would be fine wide right because he is a versatile player, and I want GAM and DMB's pace on the left side, let Deuce play right behind Jozy( who I am predicting gets a goal tomm night)I also would be fine with Edu/Bradley in the middle and let Bradley go box to box and have the freedom to go forward becasue Edu would be strictly a holding DM committed to defense.

Bradley would get more defensive responsibilities of the two, you would think. Just get forward more selectively.

Gotcha, so a typical MB role.

I cant remember who asked but I saw it mentioned in another thread about who should take our corner kicks? MB didn't look sharp on them vs Honduras and I like his presence in the box better anyway, I think Herc should be taking most if not all of our set pieces.
