They lost their edge/swag

Oh well, they were fun to root for before they completely changed their sound/look.

Or it's because they didn't have a record label breathing down their neck and made the kind of music they wanted to make. It was pure unrefined rock and roll akin to early Rolling Stones

I loved the first two albums. They just aren't the same band anymore and haven't been for years

Or it's because they got progressively better at playing their instruments.

The below is the first reference to it I could find from a google search, but it isn't the only one.

Interviewer: Do you think that the experience playing live helped create some of the changes between [A-ha Shake Heartbreak] and “Youth and Young Manhood?”

Jared Followill: Yeah, definitely. I think that’s all the difference just because since we recorded that’s all we’ve done is play live for a year straight basically. There was really nothing else in it. We wrote most of the core of the songs during soundchecks and stuff like that, and we just got a lot better on our instruments having played all those shows.

Ok but that's not what were talking about bro

The first two albums were great. Even the third had a few great songs. Then sex is on fire hit and that album was pure arena rock garbage.

So yes, they got better playing their instruments from a year of touring. But that's not any correlation to them writing completely different sounding music and overhauling their style/dress

Exactly.

They went from being a no holds barred rock n roll band to a band that caters to the high school female demographic.

I can't fault them for it they made millions but they quit making honest music in the process.

1. Sex On Fire is a bad song. It's my least favorite Kings of Leon song and by a comfortable margin.

2. I think the rest of that album is solid.

All of these critiques would be completely fair if limited to the song "Sex On Fire". Beyond that, I disagree.

Did a lot of high school girls like "Use Somebody"? Sure. But I liked it too. It's a damn good song. What else from that album was made for the HS girl demographic? Help me out. My favorite song off that album is "I want you". Who was that catered to?

And let's talk the last album. Were "Back Down South" or "Pickup truck" intended for an audience of 17 year old girls? Anything else on that album? Did you listen to the album?

I enjoy their first 3 albums.

Only By the Night is when they blew the frick up. I think most of the stuff on there is mediocre, but the song Closer is great. And their latest album was a whole lot of mediocre to me as well. I don't hate them though. Comparing them to a band like Nickelback is ridiculous and unfair.

I completely forgot about closer and that is a great fricking song.

I'm about to run off and listen to it now

I also don't hate them. I just got bored with them I still jam their first 3 on a regular basis. They made great music then they did what they had to do to get rich..... I don't like it but I ain't blame them

Bobbyray stop caring what other people think of the band you like. Just own up to it.

I am a music snob but I still dig some jimmy buffet and DMB, I understand why they are hated on I just don't care.
