Can somebody explain to me why some NBA games are blacked out?

I have Dish Network, and live in Houston. The Fox Sports regional channel for this area should be Fox Sports Southwest. They show Mavericks games, Rangers games, etc.

But when those games are on, they are blacked out for me.

Why is this? Shouldn't I get those games in my area?

To force people in the area to attend games.

When television broadcasts really picked up in the 70s (I'm guessing) they were afraid that tv would kill attendance and created the blackout policy. It continues today.

They are probably on the "FS Alternate" channel if you look for that

I have all sorts of Fox Sports channels, Missouri, Detroit, Phoenix etc. But I can never see live games on them.

... I have the channel.

I have a whole bunch of regional networks like Fox Sports Ohio, Fox Sports West, Fox Sports Arizona, Fox Sports North, etc. I can understand games being blacked out on those networks.

But Fox Sports Southwest is the regional network for my area. Shouldn't I be getting the games that come on that channel?

If you are in one team's 'home area', then other teams can't be shown on their local channel if your cable carrier has the channel.

Example: we used to get Hornets games on Cox in BR and also had Fox Sports SW. The Rockets would be on FSSW TV guide but actual game was blacked out because BR is within the Hornets home TV market.

Same here.

But I used to have Comcast. The regional network for the past few years used to be Fox Sports Houston. It was like a sub-channel of Fox Sports Southwest just for Houston. The Astros and Rockets used to come on that channel.

But they lost the rights to CSN Houston, so Fox Sports Houston went away and now it's just Fox Sports Soutwest.

But I can remember before Fox Sports Houston was around, I used to be able to watch Rangers games and Mavericks games on Fox Sports Southwest when I had Comcast.

But now with Dish, I can't see the games on that channel.

Yeah, but several years ago I can remember being able to watch Mavericks and Rangers games in addition to Rockets and Astros games on Fox Sports Soutwest.

Maybe you weren't in either team's home market? I emailed Cox like 2 years ago about the issue with Rockets games and that was the response I got from them.

True. In this area for baseball Fox Sports Midwest is Cardinals, Fox Sports KC(alt) is another channel I get to watch, it varies depending on the day. Every now and then they'll show Royals on Fox Sports Midwest.

ETA: I have DISH.

I'm in Houston, so I was definitely in the Houston market.

I guess you are right though. Maybe something changed, because I know I used to see the Rangers play.
