Anyone else really nervous about our offensive tackle situation?

We have two pretty big holes on each side of the line. I know we are built strong in the middle, and Brees can turn an average OT into an $8 mil a year player, but I'm really curious what we plan on doing.

My guess would be trying to sign Bryant McKinnie to a friendly two year deal. Maybe this will give us more time to analyze Charles Brown and see if he's really our future.

I also hope we pull a trade with the Vikings so they can move up to grab a stud receiver. We could fall back and get the best defensive prospect and also snag someone to play RT (maybe Fluker from Bama or Watson from FSU?)

It's too damn quiet and I want some news

What do you think the Saints plans are for the tackle situation?

Sign a vet! if not use a late rd. pick in draft.

I'm not as down on Brown as everyone else is. It'd be great if we sign McKinnie. If not, get a 4th rounder and call it a day.

You consider still having Strief on the right side a hole?

Maybe we could improve, but he is far from horrible. Hell he's consistently been better than Bushrod.

As far as LT, yes there is a huge question mark there. We have Brown but he's often injured and struggled at the LT spot(though played well at RT). We also have Marcel Jones who perhaps could show something there, though he is far from proven.

If we don't sign a young FA I wouldn't be surprised if they went LT early.

I think they plan on getting to more LTs to go with Brown, either Mckinnie and a draft pick or most likely to draft picks imo.

But to answer your question about being nervous, no not really, Saints are great at plugging in guys we never herd of and making them stars on the oline.

I'm the polar opposite. The first part of Free Agency is not when teams on a budget should pick up players. I like the Keenan Lewis signing - he fills a need (not the most important one, granted) and he came in at a home-based discount. The OT market is a bit inflated this year, if we jumped in and grabbed the best available to fill our highest position of need, that would have been our only move in FA.

They still have more money to spend. I think we still get one maybe two more impact players out of FA. One of those being OT.

It's about players' asking price vs. what teams are offering.

Obviously VERY few guys are signing at the moment because they are trying to get mid level money like years past.

Problem is very few teams have that kind of money to spend, and the ones who do mostly aren't looking at a lot of these guys because they are only spending big money on big names.

It's a waiting game. No team is wowing these guys with their offer and they don't want to take less money.

Edit:
The reason we got Lewis is because he came here on a cheaper deal. Had he wanted more money from us we likely would have signed no one yet.

Nope. After accomplishing what we did with bushrod, why would any person with reason be worried?!! Why worry about a staff that had to make moves at center and rt and still had a top offense? If we didnt have brees and SP, then u have valid worries. There are six stud lineman that could easily go in the first rnd. That means there are platinum pickings for SP even if he wanted wait til rnds 3-6 like usual. Trust

I'm about 99% certain we'll get him, so I'm not remotely nervous.

Well Bushrod wasn't a bad player at all.

Our WRs are getting older/aren't exactly great at getting seperation.

Brees is getting older as well, although he hasn't really started to regress.

Everyone takes our "top offense" for granted but the NFL catches up quickly. We can play it off as coaching inconsistency and playcalling but our offense stalled A LOT last year and our mediocre talent on the outside definitely played a part in that. Just because we've made do with marginal players in the past doesn't necessarily mean we can/should continue to do so if the situation to greatly improve presents itself. Our nucleus is getting older/leaving. How we replace it will go a long way in determining if we make it back deep in the playoffs or not.

IMO our offense stalled because we obviously were missing the best play caller in the game and also we were not balanced on offense. We get a 50-50 ratio or even a 60-40 pass ratio we are back to ball control and the offense dictating defenses instead of vice versa.

He only gave up more combined pressures, hits, and sacks than ANY other FA tackle the last two years.

There's a reason they never even offered him a contract.

That said, he was healthy which is something Brown never seems to be.

And how many of those were from teams who attempted as many passes as the saints? I didn't think he was great or even a probowler or even that we should pay him. But we can't just throw a below average player and expect things to keep humming along.

No. All of our attention should be devoted to signing a 32 year old cornerback to an insane contract.

On the other hand, you could argue . . .

that we're in deep shite without help at tackle.

LOL! What Strief are you watching? The only time he is serviceable is when we give him help.

Although I think bushrod was the weak link (think about it, we plugged and played so many RT due to injuries, but that side was fine), this number seems inflated in comparison to other teams that don't throw as much as us, right?
