Orcas in the channel

Thursday evening. Doesn't happen often but it's pretty cool to be able to see humpbacks and orcas from downtown. I missed this one.

It happens a couple times a year.

Damn, that's awesome. I thought I saw a Loch Ness monster in the red river the other day, but it was just a whole oak tree.

We occasionally get humpbacks as well in the channel as well. It's pretty narrow, less than a mile wide in most places.

No matter how long you live here you just don't get tired of watching Orcas, or even humpbacks. We actually have resident pods of orcas that stay here year round, and a few humpbacks too.

I saw a pod of orcas kill a minke whale once.

Are they in there feeding? What do they feed on in the channel?

Damnit Roger, the highlight of my week was my lab almost catching a possum in the back yard.

Saw that exact same thing when I was there in 2008. Unforgettable.

Thanks for sharing pictures.
As always....makes most everyone wish they were in Alaska (for part of the year anyway).

They were probably looking for harbor seals. They are not uncommon downtown especially at high tide.

Harbor seals often use ice from calving glaciers as a roosting place to protect themselves from orcas. Sea otters use kelp beds.

I was thinking the same thing with my lab and a little snake. I don't have crap on Roger.

Yeah, pretty awesome critters. We have multiple transient and resident pods around here, as well as humpbacks and can be seen anytime in the inner channels. They just rarely venture into the channel near downtown.

This one was between Douglas and Admiralty Islands

Well, I missed this pod. Didn't see them. Usually get texts when they are visible in the channel but my network let me down.

I assume the humpbacks are feeding too when they are in the channel. Or are they?

Me and a buddy were sailing upstream on Red River up above Cash Point when we SLAMMED to a stop. Next thing you know a limb comes out of the water like ten feet in the air as the tree we just hit with the keel rolls under us. Looked like a nessie head popping out of the water right beside us. Whole damn tree was completely submerged and heading downstream.
