Repeal ADA: Hale County, Alabama, 1 in 4 working-age adults is on disability.

quote:

In the past three decades, the number of Americans who are on disability has skyrocketed. The rise has come even as medical advances have allowed many more people to remain on the job, and new laws have banned workplace discrimination against the disabled. Every month, 14 million people now get a disability check from the government.

In Hale County, Alabama, 1 in 4 working-age adults is on disability. On the day government checks come in every month, banks stay open late, Main Street fills up with cars, and anybody looking to unload an old TV or armchair has a yard sale.

What does the ADA have to do with people being on disability? Tighten up.

Thanks baybeefeetz.

Although, I do agree with the OP's intended complaint. SSDI is too damned easy to get (plus, it's a "double whammy" because those on SSDI are eligible for Medicare, regardless of age).

Disability is the new unemployment. When your 99 weeks are up and you still don't have a job, claim a disability and the money keeps coming. If thats not enough to keep up your preferred lifestyle then get on food stamps too. There is no shame in gaming the system anymore.

I wonder where "crazy checks" fit into the equation. Several years ago the Montgomery newspaper did a report about this. One of the kids they mentioned said his momma called him her "little Cadillac payment."

Remember seeing a story on a Louisiana woman who had a buttload of chillens, and she was getting "crazy checks" for every one of them. Guess ya just gotta know which Docs will accept a kickback to certify them "crazy".

I have a rod,six plates and over 50 screws in femur,I also have 8 plates and bout 30 screws in arm. I had 18 hospital stays over 4 yrs due to Being ran over while riding my Motorcycle. I was on disability because I couldn't work. I'm consider handicapped and always will be. But I got my arse up and got back in the work force because its the way my parents raised me. I also don't use a handicap tag to get a prime parking spot. I jog 3-4 miles bout 4 times a week. Andi say all this not for props, but to say I'm worse off than 95% of these fricking leeches and I can't wait til they run out of money to pay these people.Whats sad is that the ones who really need it are looked down on. I was told I could and should be on it for life.im now 48. Oh and Advil is the strongest thing I ever need. Ok I'll quit ranting.

Although the OP has nothing to do with the ADA I did hear an interesting news report saying that lawyers were going to go after retailers who sell merchandise online. Blind people can't buy online and it's a violation of the ADA.

Anyone ever been to Hale County Alabama? It's part of Alabama's Black Belt region. From an economic standpoint, the Black Belt would roughly be the equivalent to some of the poorer African countries.

Think of it in the same context of white flight as seen in urban areas. Now expand that to an entire county and that's what you have. There are literally no jobs to be had in the area. The people there are poor with little to no education. Hell, the church we attend does a mission trip to Sawyerville, Al every year to teach young children.

I assume most, if not all of the locals are on gov't assistance. All of the ones I've spoken with are. It's sad.

Anyone Guess Where the Black Belt Is?

Or guess the demographics?
