and I'm in the market for another home computer. The wife and I both have laptops but dont bring them home often enough so i need something that i can get on the cheap but still offer me years of service. I wont be doing any heavy computing but it will be connected to my network, tv and reciever which controls the audio and video for my house.
So basically internet usage but with the ability to connect to my network and do some light computing. maybe a game or 2 if this mass exodus from the dirty console gamers to the master race continues...
Any help would be awesome...
$500?? to low?

This is the budget I requested yesterday! Set your budget wherever you want.

I think you can handle a media center pc with some firepower for that range.

Want to build and leave it alone for the life of the computer (as it appears you did the old dell) or do you want to further upgrade it down the road?
if its the former - I'd say an AMD APU build would be ideal in that price range.
if its the latter - we can go with a good base and an underpowered Video Card that can be changed out later.

how future proof can we make it?

for gaming in that budget? you cant.
for general use, a higher end APU will set you up for quite a while

APU 5800k with the ability to add a 7670?
Idk, I could get you something for 500 with a 7850 or 650ti.

That's a lot of numbers.
Any of those solid state drives?

Just admit that you want a gaming computer.

you want a whole hell of a lot for a $500 budget
what about getting a athlon II x3 and unlocking the 4th core to make it a phenom?
the core unlocking is super simple with the right board

Tbh just buy a console. So awesome!

A $500 will easily outperform a console!

Rosewill challenger is a great super cheap case.
I had an OCZ semi modular PSU in my first build. It was like $40 and lasted 4 months before I sold it since I upgraded. I don't know any cheap PSUs to recommend
