The Seven GOP Congressmen Who Were Vindicated On Iraq

These are the true patriots who put country before party.

quote:

"To me, it was about growing up in the Vietnam era and not wanting to go through that again," said Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, who, in 2002, was the only GOP senator to vote against invading Iraq. "I remember the difficulty the soldiers had coming back here after Vietnam. They had the same issues: PTSD, re-immersion, alcoholism. You have to be prepared to take all that on."

Chafee also didn't believe CIA officials who showed him photos of metal tubes in Iraq and said they were being used to make weapons of mass destruction. He recalled thinking those tubes could have been purchased at a local hardware store and used for a multitude of things.

"More than anything, it was the body language of the CIA that told me it wasn't true," he said.

"There was no threat to our national security, and also the arguments that they were using [for] why we had to go in, I didn't believe them," said former Rep. Ron Paul (Texas), one of the six House Republicans who opposed the war. "I could see where it was going to cost us a lot of money, and I kept saying this even before -- it's going to cost us a lot of money, a lot of lives. It's going to go on a long time."

Former Rep. Connie Morella (Md.) said she couldn't separate war from being the mother of nine.

"I had to look at it as a parent, but also look at the fact that the we're talking about sending young people into conflict," Morella said. "There was also the idea that we had not gone through checking with the UN and getting support of allies. We were doing this unilaterally.

quote:

"I just felt it was the wrong war at the wrong time," said former Rep. Amory Houghton (N.Y.), who said he never believed that Iraqi leaders were building weapons of mass destruction.

"The information I'd gotten on weapons of mass destruction made me think they were not there," Houghton said. Asked how he came to that conclusion when so many others didn't, Houghton replied, "Everybody had the same information I had. It's all about how you interpret it, isn't it?"

quote:

Former Rep. James Leach (Iowa) said he never believed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or that Iraqi leaders had ties to al Qaeda, which is why it wasn't hard for him to oppose the war.

"If we didn’t know after years of review and international inspections where alleged nuclear capacities were located and where alleged biological weapons were stored in a society filled with dissenters, it appeared to me that the Iraqi WMD threat served more as an exaggerated rationale for war than a true challenge to our national security," said Leach.

Most of the GOP war detractors said they received a steady stream of criticism after their votes. Morella said people would leave notes at the front door of her house saying they disagreed with her. Some called her children, who were grown and living elsewhere, to say they disagreed with Morella's vote.

Chafee said he took heat from his GOP colleagues, but was "adamant" in his position. Houghton said he, too, faced criticism from colleagues, but said he didn't really care since he was 60 years old when he got elected to Congress and didn't feel the need to walk in lockstep with leadership.

"I didn't have any aspirations for the brass ring," Houghton said. "I just wanted to try to do the right thing for the country."

Did someone start a thread about these folks that I'm unaware of? Ceratinly, I've never defended anyone who voted for the Iraq War, whether they were Republicans or Democrats, and I'm glad it cost Hillary the nomination in 2008.

It's funny yet sad that everything is interpreted in regards to party affiliation. That's really the problem this country has right now, people are unable to view things through objective eyes.

Of course there were more Democrats who voted against it, but I think these Republicans deserve special mention because they stood up to a President from their own party. However, one Democrat who voted against it deserves special mention IMO.

As you may recall, this vote took place just a few weeks before the 2002 mid-term election. W purposely wanted it that way because he wanted "the voters to know where their Congressmen and Senators stood before the election". Of the 67 senators who weren't up for re-election, 45 voted for the war and 22 voted against it. Of the 33 who were up for re-election, 32 voted for it, and only one voted against it. That one was Paul Wellstone, who on the eve of the vote called a meeting with his family to inform them that he was going to be taking a vote the next day that would probably cost him the election, and so they should be prepared to move back to Minnesota at the end of the year. Keep in mind that he knew the vote was going to pass with or without his vote, so it would have been easy for him to rationalize voting for it to spare himself walking the gang plank for his moral principles, but he didn't Unfortunately, he died in a plane crash before the election, so he never got to find out if his moral principles cost him his job.

I hated the idea of another pointless war, but I thought the first gulf was was pointless.

The fact is iraq was acting in direct violation of its peace treaty, war was justified on that point alone.

I think he meant multiple U.N. resolutions.

If that's what he's talking about, his argument makes no sense. If the U.S. was to take it upon itself to go around enforcing U.N. resolutions, we'd be in never-ending wars with nations from all over the world. And FYI, Israel has been found in violation of more resolutions than any other nation in the history of the U.N.

I'm not the one who brought up violations of U.N. resolutions as justification for attacking Iraq, Turbeaxdog did, so you should take your beef up with him. FYI, I wrote the OP and I think the war is wrong, and when someone spouts nonsense about U.N. resolutions, I'm going to call him on this hypocrisy, even if it offends, anti-American, Israel-firsters like yourself.

No, I don't read memos to find out what my opinions are supposed to be.

Pitiful.

You know you've struck a nerve when someone gets offended by the presentation of objective historical facts. Notice he didn't accuse me of lying, he only wants me to refrain from presenting uncomfortable facts.
