Did that say only 7 inches of penetration? Suprising at 3700 ftps

Light, high-velocity rounds are made to penetrate very little and transfer a bunch of energy.

This is the exact reason I suggest the Hornady Vmax for home defense in an AR15. It will penetrate the chest cavity but not exit, thus minimizing collateral damage.

Generally speaking, as the velocity of a rifle hunting bullet goes up, penetration goes down. As pointed out by bapple, a highly fragile bullet like a V-Max is not designed to penetrate deeply.

I've cleaned a deer shot with a .22-250 55gr soft point at about 40 yards. It was pretty brutal (the famous grenade effect) and a few pieces of the bullet made it out the other side, but if it had ran anywhere we would have needed to put dogs on it. It was hard to find the entrance with the hide still on.

I maintain that .25 is the minimum caliber that should be used for whitetails.

Thats all fine and dandy but I want to see that KE vs /\X graph overlapped with the 30-06 results.

If you dont knock down that deer, which is likely since all of the KE is transferred to the animal within those 7", you will be tracking a crappy bloodtrail

According to his graph it's a twenty percent gel, but I thought the standard was ten?

IMO the most important ingredients to a successful kill and recovery are shot placement, expansion, and consistent exits.

Bullets that don't exit lead to work for the blood dogs. .22-250 definitely lacks the consistent exit part of the equation.

Completely agree with everything you just said

If the KE argument was the so important then bow hunting would be deemed unethical

Projectile...........Weight.............Velocity.......Kinetic Energy
.30-06 Rifle......180 grains........2600 fps......2701 ft. lbs.
Modern Arrow...540 grains..........300..............108

without a great exit hole, the deer will not drop blood. With that 22-250, you're making an entrance hole smaller than the size of a pencil with no exit hole. Sure, the insides may be mush but have fun tracking all night

Any time I hear somebody say "it's like you put a grenade in it" I

Sure you are going to get some very dramatic kills with those rounds, but the first time you hit a solid piece of bone you're going to have issues.

Give me a bullet that exits 99% of the time. I may not get the "grenade" kills as often, but I will have consistently good results with more room for error.

My 22-250 has killed 7 deer and none have ran more than 50 yds. I shot a better bullet though that stayed together. I did quit using it because I was afraid my kids would make a bad shot and lose a deer.

My dad says you can hear the bullet hit the deer before the report of the rifle with a 22-250

I think he's full of shite

Exactly my thought when I see people who get kids guns shooting 60-80 grain bullets. They should shoot the heaviest bullet they can handle, in most instances.

It could be true for any supersonic projectile depending on the location of the person listening.

Just sounds like BS at first glance
