We are going to be going in the middle of July. Three families, 17 people. We would prefer to have one large house/cabin to stay in. Any opinions welcome. Would rather get out of the heat a little bit and don't want the beach.

Vail, Breckinridge really any ski town in CO is awesome in the offseason. Great hiking, fishing and camping spots.

Gatlinburg/Asheville if you want to drive.

If you can fly one of the best vacations I've been on was Glacier National Park. It was absolutely amazing and one of the prettiest places I've ever seen. Also, went into Canada to see Waterton Lakes NP. Also amazing

I'm sure it's just me, but that doesn't sound anywhere near a vacation to me.
Anywhere from Asheville to Gatlinburg I would think.

Woodson's. You can rent the lodge. Hell you can rent the upstairs too if you need.

I'll agree with that. We've been to Estes Park many times and it's great for what the OP is looking for. The Dillon area too. Leadville and Telluride are a couple of places I've wanted to try; lots of places in Colorado.

Outside Colorado - Ruidoso NM is good. If you can find something near Glacier NP it's awesome. Jackson Hole is nice.

In July any place in the mountains feels great. I'm a much bigger fan of the western mountains than the Smokies to be honest.

Hot Springs, North Carolina. Rafting and white water kayaking. They also have spas for the ladies and girly men. Rent a huge cabin in the mountains. Anyone gives you grief, you can lose the body in the mountains.

we stayed at a cabin on a lake in the ozarks a few years ago. It was very pretty, good fishing, quite, and most important there was none of the touristy crap that keeps you on the road and hectic the whole time.

Estes Park, Co. National park there with tons of wildlife all over place, rafting and trout fishing. Lots of big homes to rent. We usually get ours on VRBO.com

I'd do the houseboat in lake ouachita Arkansas all over again if I could. Doesn't get much better than that. My family and two other families did it about 2 years ago for the fourth and enjoyed it.
