...for my birthday. So far I've heard of Brennan's, Galatoire's, August, Emeril's and Commander's Palace. Anybody have a recommendation out of those restaurants? Recommendations of food to try?

TIA

all or viable options. it really depends on what you like, what dining experiences you've enjoyed, etc.

Scratch Brennan's. anyone if the others would be fine. Galatoire's only takes reservations for upstairs. You want to eat downstairs, so if you choose that one, let us know when you're going to get further advice.

August is the best of those. Commanders and Galatoires are more of an experience. Brennan's is dogshit.

I have not been yet but I hear Revolution in the Royal Sonesta is pretty legit.

To put it lightly.

From what I understand, August is overpriced and you may leave hungry. Is this true? Is it all fancy presentation and small servings?

Commanders gets my vote. I personally like it better than August.

Brennans is undergoing an ownership change - under the old owners, it became nothing more than a tourist trap.
August is "fancy". I've never left there feeling hungry, but not sure what type of eater you are - if you're not an adventurous sort, forget August.
I would also add Bayonnas and NOLA to your list. Both are in the FQ and serve phenomenal food.

Had a horrible experience at NOLA last time I went. Wouldn't recommend it.

It's been kicked around some on this board, but I would highly recommend if you're going at night and can get the private room. Beautiful restaurant, and the food can be very good. Certainly better than a few the OP had listed before.

It is expensive, but it might be the best restaurant in the entire city, so it is priced accordingly.

I haven't left hungry, but I'm not a fatty.

But if you're looking in the high end price range, Stella!, R'evolution, Le Foret should also be looked in to.
