Can I use my bank statements as proof I spent money at places like Wal Mart as proof that I paid sales tax?

Did you get audited? I have not filed my taxes yet

No I did not get audited, but if I claim sales tax based on what I spent at local stores it is more than my state income tax paid.

Bank statements are sufficient if you ever get audited.
Not sure if you know this, but the IRS also provides a calculator to estimate sales tax without any receipts, etc. required. It is based on your income level and place of residence.

Also, you can only claim either state sales tax or state income tax. I see that you live in BR and I have very rarely seen someone's sales tax be higher than their income tax in LA. The only exception is when there is some big purchase made during the year

So if I bought a new car this year I may want to claim the sales tax?

Definitely. That's usually the big one that bumps it above state income tax.

Well in that case, my suggestion is to use the IRS provided calculator and also include the sales tax for the 50k worth of vehicles.
