The team is in really bad shape. The franchise is in pretty good shape.

I agree. Benson is a proven winner. Davis is a perennial all star. Elite potential.

We all should want more. I know I do. Let us frick around with this bullshite for another year or two. AD will be just like CP and DWest, wanting more and outta here.

I think we all do want more, some of us just have different views on what the problems are. IMO what happens with Gordon and the cap space next year is WAY more important than who the coach is in 2013.

WAAAAAAAAAAY more important.

You still have not provided an alternative. Stan Van Gundy is probably the biggest name on the market right now and I can't see him coming here next year. The way I see it 2014 is the first year to expect this to be a regular playoff team. 1) Why does it matter who the coach is before the playoff window is open? 2) Why do you think we can get this magical better than Monty coach before the playoff window opens?

Have you forgotten how that all went sideways? It was the Front Office, not the coaching that was the problem. Although Byron's reluctance to play rookies may have played into some of the roster mismanagement. David West himself has stated that Tyson Chandler being traded was the beginning of the end of the CP3 era. That's when they started losing faith in the organization.

Do you think Monty still has the players' ears like he used to?

I am far from a monty sunshine pumper however I do think he deserves one more year to show what he can do but do you have any evidence to support that he doesn't?

I don't hang out with any of the players, so I don't have evidence. I was just curious if y'all think his "message" is still being received?

For this fan, seeing the same methods not work ( rotations, misuse of Davis in 4th qtr, lack of time out during opponents runs, etc), make me question his message. These things are Monty's coaching philosophies. Oh, and lack of play design in crunch time. That especially baffles me.

Yes I do, but I don't attribute that to Monty as much as I attribute that to the players we have (although Monty had a hand in the type of players that are here). Other than Gordon this team is full of rookies or team first role players, not really the type to tune out a coach. Vasquez and Anderson both gave interviews in the past week or so where they were enthusiastic about the team's future despite all the losses. And even with all of the losses everyone but Gordon and Henry are having a pretty good year for them. Even though the team is losing a lot, it's just not the type of toxic situation that usually goes along with coaches losing their team.

But how much of that is attributable to the players? You wish you could see option B, and think this is Monty being stubborn, but option A may literally be the best option. Do you think Monty's quotes form yesterday were wrong?

quote:

Vasquez is really only good with the ball. He has turned himself into a league-average 3-point shooter, but defenses aren’t going to respect him away from the ball. This presents a problem for Williams, especially since his other wing players — his small forwards — are non-threatening from the perimeter. “We try to mix in Eric getting the ball and giving him a lot of freedom,” Williams says. “But because we don’t have great shooting on the wings when Eric has the ball, the other team will just trap him, and that takes him right out of the pick-and-roll. He really spaces the floor for us, and that allows Greivis to penetrate with the ball. If we do things the other way around, we might not be as efficient.”

There's also a quote in there about how the bad perimeter defense is making the front line look bad too. We already saw this when DC and MT5 were running the show as rookies and West and Okafor looked terrible on defense. Next season CP3 is mostly healthy and we trade DC for Ariza to shore up the perimeter defense and all of the sudden many Hornets fans thought Okafor was an All Star snub after the way he anchored the defense. There's only so much coaching can do if you don't have the players to execute the plays.

In an earlier thread I mentioned one of the problems with Vasquez is that he's not fast enough to give you more than a pass to the pick man or heave a shot, and you're response was "Then sit his arse on the bench in crunch time. If youre a starting PG in this league your progressions should be not limited to A then heave" So who should be the point guard at the end of games, the rookie that had to play in Europe for 4 years before making it to the NBA or the rookie that's been having the worst rookie campaign ever?

I actually like Vasquez, and think his playing time is more the reason why his stats have risen. If you remember, he was the 09 ACC player of the year. He also was 2nd team All American that year. Plus he was chosen the Bob Cousy award winner given to the best collegiate point guard. I agree he is on the slow side as far as being a PG, but he's not a bum.

My whole thing is Monty has to put his players in the best position to succeed. Maybe he shouldn't wait late in the shot clock to try to get an open look. Maybe put the ball in Gordon's hands and let him create ala Phoenix opening night.

I don't recall exactly how much time was on the clock in the Portland game. I saw Monty's post game interview when he said that the play was supposed to have Ryan pop out to receive the pass. When that was covered, then basically the play was over. Vasquez had to freestyle for the lack of a better word. My point is again there was option A and no option B.

I think tonight is a HUGE game for us and no one seems to realize it yet.

Playing the Wizards in Washington, we should win. Otherwise, we remain a joke in the Western Conference where our 8th seed is better than the Eastern's 5th seed. Just saying

Tonight was very frustrating. The first half was good, fluid basketball. AD was active, EG was playing well, and I thought the bench gave good effort. Then the second half comes and the offense deteriorates into Vasquez holding the ball until under seven seconds on the shot clock. If you look at Vasquez's stats tonight they aren't bad, but my God he held the ball SO much. It was very frustrating to watch. Our offense was very stagnant. EG took 3 shots in the third qtr and AD got 0 (I know, fouls). We have no shot to win, even against terrible teams like the Wizards, if our offense is Vasquez holding the ball for 80% of the second half. Tough.

As long as you don't spread your seed, we're good.

I'm not ready to fire him yet, but if they made a change at the end of the year I wouldn't be that upset as long as we don't get a Van Gundy

I'd give Monty one more year, If next year isn't any better then he has to go.

I think we have to be in serious contention for playoffs for Monty to stay after next season.
