OK, old-timers, who remembers these gals? Do they still get the credit they deserve? Not only were there the implications of being an all female band, but they were also at the forefront of the New Wave movement.

I was always a huge fan. Something about Belinda Carlisle's voice and Gina Schock's drums hooked me from the start.

They pretty much faded away after 1984's very good, but poor selling "Talk Show" LP. They soon disbanded, but occasionally regrouped for an odd show here and there. They released 2001's "God Bless the Go-Go's" (also very good and critically acclaimed--but poor selling as well) and have toured together ever since.

Regardless of how you may or may not feel about them, they should have made the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame based solely on 1981's "Beauty and the Beat", which was not only very good, but groundbreaking. To this day it is still the only album written and performed solely by women to reach No. 1 (six consecutive weeks).

(don't give me any of this Bangles shite--they were only about Susanna Hoffs)

And no one can convince me that Gina Schock isn't one of the best rock drummers ever(not to mention a top notch pop songwriter). She's like a damn machine. Kathy Valentine (bass, guitar) and Charlotte Caffey (Lead Guitar, Keyboards) are very underrated and under appreciated musicians.

Can't really comment on her drumming, but did like them in the day. Saw them in concert at the 1984 World's Fair with INXS opening up for them.

A little trivia...Ellen DeGeneres' brother, Vance DeGeneres (former bassist of The Cold) had a short-lived band with Gina called "House of Schock". Even did an old Cold song,
Seems Like Forever

(Much better when Barbara Menendez sang it).

They did a handful of reunion gigs in the late 90s and came through NOLA. Bumped into them at The Saint at like 3am. Recognized Belinda Carlisle and Charlotte Chaffey IMMEDIATELY. Also - Jane Weidlen is TINY. Drank sake with them for about an hour. Took pictures in the little photo booth thingie. Have 'em in my rummage drawer somewhere.

Anybody remember when Carlisle left and the rest of the GoGo's formed The Graces.

They had a couple good tunes including "Lay Down Your Arms"

Live version here.

I have to wonder if Belinda's foray into bubblegum pop didn't hurt the Go-Gos musical legacy.

No hate for the Go Gos from me, but the Bangles were a lot more than just Susanna Hoffs, as if she wasn't enough. The Peterson sisters are/were very talented, and there's a direct lineage from The Runaways via bassist Michael Steele.

And Vicki Peterson was great in The Continental Drifters, and speaking of lineage, she is married to one of the Cowsills, look that one up if you aren't an old timer.

I love that in a long treatise on the Go Gos, the OP never mentions Jane Wiedlin, who was one of the biggest creative forces in the band.

And yes, Belinda Carlisle's solo career has damaged the Go Go's legacy. thankfully, we've pretty much agreed to forget it ever happened, as a culture.

Yeah, my bad. Can't believe I neglected her. Always loved her. I understand that when she's not being a Go-Go she enjoys being a dominatrix.
