Italy: Rome, Florence, and Just Outside of Florence

Ok, there is a pizza place close to the Yellow Hostel that was pretty tasty. It has been since 05 that iw as there. FYI, no one orders round full pizzas there, just slices. iLooked like an idiot.


There is another restaurant, but i need to find the matchbook from the place for the name, it is Trattoria something but i cant remember the name of it.



There is a gelato place (was) down one of the alleys by trevi fountain taht was awesome. I have no idea any more info than this lol.

I would check out one of the lets go europe books for recommendations- it has pricing and genre options


I have a journal that id have to go back and check and see if i wrote down stuff and such.

Katie Parlas blog parlafood.com is my go to source for Rome. So much of the food in the centro storico is touristy and bad, but she helps you to sort it out. Search the board, there was a recent thread on Italy.

You have to go to Il Latini.

I studied abroad for a semester and a friend of mine and I traveled across Europe for awhile. We ate as cheap as we could to make sure we had money to get to the next stop. However, in Florence we got a recommendation to go to Il Latini, so we decided to splurge beyond a slice of pizza and try it out. It was one of the best meals I have ever had. It was authentically Italian, it was not dumbed down for foreigners. We ran up quite a bill and the owner came by to make sure everything was good. He told us that the restaurant had been in his family for several generations and talked about where we were from. He cut our bill in half and wished us a good trip. It was an awesome experience and incredible food.

Trattoria Za-Za in Florence.

There are so many places in Rome and I haven't spent that much time there...so I'll let someone else help you here.

As for Florence, you have to get a Bistecca Fiorentina(Florentine Steak). Personally, I recommend Sostanza. You eat so much pasta and bread while you're in Italy, if you have a Florentine Steak at the end of your trip(when you're sick of pasta), it will be one of the most glorious steaks you will ever eat.

I know they're trained in Tuscany, but let us know if you see any chefs walking about in Olive Garden chef's jackets.

Check out her blog. It has the details. We were there for a week two Thanksgivings ago. I think it was 85 euros if it was just the list or 100 if she made reservations.

I stumbled onto her website from a link in the NYT. At the time she was doing it just from website and word of mouth. Now she is on Trip Advisor. Looks like nothing but positive reviews.

The tour was excellent, combined food, history, culture. Ate so much, glad to have been walking. She is very friendly, kept my two teenagers entertained, which if you have ever traveled with a 15 year old girl whose phone does not work, is saying something.
