There are a lot of good rifles out there now. My faves:

Browning x-Bolt
Tikka t3
Remington 700
Winchester M70

From $400-1000 you have many options. All are good. Depends on if you want to customize in the future, weight of rifle, many things to consider.

The Ruger American Rifle is a good budget rifle. May not be a tack driver like the others mentioned but I'm sure it'll take down a deer.

For a budget rifle, you can't beat the mossberg 100 atr. For 3 bills you can't beat it, now its not a m70 or a xbolt, but its a solid rifle.

What's your price range? I've been looking long and hard.

Rem 700
Tikka
Browning abolt and xbolt

Are a few of the ones I'm leaning to.

Browning x-Bolt

Just traded one of these off in .308 SS Stalker and to be honest I've missed it ever since. But the guy made me a deal I couldn't pass up. I will definitely own another one day

I've been looking at the 270. Browning X Bolt. I know it's pricey but I've been a browning man ever since I was born.

How are the X Bolts on weights compared to other rifles in its class?

Got a used Ruger M77 .270. Love it. I shoot left handed so the tang safety helps.

ETA. I never payed attention to weight and balance and that stuff till I bought a Howa 1500. I never could get comfortable shooting that damn thing. Traded it to a guy who was glad to get it but i could not hit for shite with it. I just never felt balanced.
