new build..help needed
Posted by SwampdogDC on 3/8/13 at 5:10 pm00
About to build my first, wanted to last year but had an unexpected injury which put me out of commision. Need experts like baracuda to wiegh in.
Have a monitor already, want to keep it as low as possible. Basic gaming and home needs. Would like a SSD once I figure out what it means and how it works. I3, I5 whatever is decent and great deal.
Thanks in advance.

Like to keep it under $800 if possible. When I get a chance i log into EQ every now and then. Would like to play Dragon Age, Witcher 2 maybe some DayZ. Need to add a comp at my business, so thought i would stick this one there and get me one for home that can game some.

How high do your setting need to be? You should be able to get 1080 resolution but maybe not all max settings

not sure, would like it to look good, but honestly i been playing on a eight year old comp so not sure.

I'll do a mock up in a little while. I just did a build for $1000 so I know that range a little. You do want an ssd?

if there is an advantage to it? Not sure, just read that alot of people get one, and thanks

It will run your applications much faster including boot times. For gaming it will only really benefit load times. For your budget if it was me I wouldn't get one. I would put all my money into gaming performance. Is your monitor 1080?

Yes, it is 1080, and ok we can drop the SSD.

1. No i3, only dual core. Get a FX chip if so.4300 is around the same price and will perform better than an i3
2. Spend on the SSD
2. Spend on the SSD

It can be added later, imo. I love it for the boot times and load times, but it isn't NEEDED. Just my opinion and I game hardcore.

That's how I feel. If you have one you won't go back but if you haven't used one you can live without.

A 120GB SSD is only a tad over $100. Its a great investment. Youll love it the first time you go from off to desktop in under 10 seconds.
FX 4300 is quad core and $120 on newegg.

CPU: AMD FX-8150 3.6GHz 8-Core Processor ($159.99 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($47.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon HD 7870 XT 2GB Video Card ($239.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (Arctic White) ATX Mid Tower Case ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: SeaSonic G 550W 80 PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224BB DVD/CD Writer ($15.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $713.92
This is just a start. I don't know much about amd so I left the mobo off for everyone else to pitch it. Optical is optional if you already have one. Sales can change some of this like the psu cause they will often put one with higher wattage on sale for close to that price. I would def get that gpu if you can though.
Eta: if you live near a microcenter that changes things.

I just bought the gigabyte windforce 660 2gb w/Kepler for 229 and a 20$ rebate if you are looking for nvidia option. Only one 6pin and a little smaller, runs cool too. Will run most anything on single display at 1080p high above 30, and many games 60fps.
Also bought Samsung SSD 120gb for 89$ at the egg.
if u go AMD ( I have a 4100) there is a nice AsRock board for like 88$ has PCI 3.0 x16 and a 4x PCI slot with all the goodies on back. USB 3.0 some legacy ps/2 plugs and other inputs.
the ram , case, PSU are solid..I did go with a cheaper case from newegg. Antec300 or 900 is a pretty solid first build choice and not 80$. I also use stock heatsink on AMD if not overclocking.
You also will want to factor in cost of a OS and I don't think I saw keyboard or mouse. Also, if for home use..sd card reader? Speakers? I don't know what you are taking off your old rig going to office.

R4 is the only case I know about so there are other options, I just don't know them.

4300 is a huge jump from 4100.
So is 6320 from 6120 and 8320 from 8120.
Vishera was really a big step over Zambezi. If you do go AMD, go with the prefix of 43XX,63XX,83XX over 41XX,61XX,81XX.
