My wife and I want to take a little vacation this summer. Nothing crazy. We are not OT ballers. Our son is going to be 1 at the end of this month.

We are thinking about renting a cabin in a state park and doing some fishing, hiking, cooking and swimming. It will be our first trip together as a family.

Where would you guys recommend we go? Thanks in advance.

Cooper state park has very nice facilities, great cabins, good fishing, a swimming beach, a play ground, a fantastic boat launch, and is often overlooked by locals.

How far are you wanting to travel?

Do you have a boat?

Would like to keep it to 4-5 hours from Houston.

No boat at this time. Working on that in the next couple years.

If it was me I would head out west toward the hill country.

With a 1 yr old and the Texas Summer heat I would not want to be doing a lof of hiking and some times state parks don't have the best swimming options but thats just me.

I recommend the 7bluff cabins along the Frio River. Nice calm pools for the baby to be able to play in, shade trees nice cabins just a nice relaxing time overall. We have stayed here before a really nice place.

And if you do want to do some hiking you are 5 minutes from garner state park.

Check out reserveamerica.com, it'll give you a brief description & amenities listing for all parks.

I don't know how much exploring you have done around TX or how long you have lived in Houston. But my first time headed out west into those areas is what I had always pictured in my mind as what TX would or should look like coming from person living in BR...don't know if that makes any sense.

I've been in Texas a little over two years. Live south of Houston. About halfway between downtown and Galveston. I've been to garner once with family several years ago.

Haven't done much exploring yet but that's the plan for us. We've been married almost two years and the baby will be a year old I the 26th. We just want to do a little getaway just the three of us.

We both love the outdoors and figured a cabin in a state park would be fun for now.
