If the basin is called the spillway, what is the spillway called?

I get confused as hell by all of the terminology. Grew up in SELA, and the spillway to me was Bonnet Carre Spillway, because frankly, it's name is spillway. Always called the Atchafalaya Basin the basin.

What is the distinction between the two, and is the upper Atch/MS/Red River crossing called the spillway also?

started calling it the basin after calling both of them the spillway for a long time, we used to just call the bonnet carre spillway the "norco spillway"

Typically a river basin is the lower section of a river including the delta/mouth/flood plain where the river is wider and slow moving. Folks around here refer to the flood plain/backwater as the basin.

A spillway is an area in the upper/mid section of a river that occassionally floods and is usually controlled by man-made structures (Morganza,Bonnet Carre)in an effort to prevent flooding downriver.

From the Lafayette/New Iberia area, it was always referred to as "The Basin".

The Atchafalaya Basin is "The basin".

The Bonnet Carre Spillway is "The spillway".

I've lived between New Orleans and Lafayette I've never heard the basin referred to as the spillway, but I've heard the spillway referred to as the basin.

Don't forget about the Bayou Pigeon/Bayou Sorrel area.

I have heard the exact opposite, that's why it needs to be cleared up. The "too early for the spillway" thread is one example

I consider the butte larose area where pilot channel and atchafalaya meet up the basin.
Morgan city is considered basin to me.

Up near 3 rivers, I call that the spillway.

Mississippi River near norco is the spillway.

One has to assume if you are on the OB asking about fishing a spillway it would be the Atch Basin.

Basin would be the system as a whole. Example, you have the Verret side and the Spillway side if you launch at Adams or Doirons, but both are part of the Atch Basin system. Just like the numerous tributaries and Bonne Carre spillway feed the Pontchatrain Basin.

A "river basin" is the entire area drained by the river, not just the lower portion. The Atchafalaya helps drain the Mississippi River basin. The Atchafalaya basin just so happens to consist of only the lower portion of a larger basin.

Good point, I've also heard the Morganza Floodway referred to as the "spillway".

Don't know much, but being from SELA I've always called the ATCH the basin and the BC the spillway.
