You shouldn't ask people that enjoy doing it and find the experience worthwhile. We will tell you it is totally worth it. The best advice I have is to go and help someone that finishes or trains dogs. They will always need help with throwing bumpers, setting up blind retrieves, shooting pigeons, etc.

You will also learn more from watching and helping an experienced trainer than you ever will from reading a Richard Wolters book.

You should ask the people that tried it and failed, and determine if you would be like those people.

I have trained several. I enjoy the process. Others do not have the patience or the commitment or the resources. Ultimately, Only you can answer if it will be worth it....

Edit: You will also learn how to pick the puppy you want to train and keep out of a litter. There is a lot of dog psychology (in my opinion) that can be used to determine what type of dog you will have from the characteristics of the puppy before you take it home.

I'm training my lab/brittany spaniel mix right now. First dog I've ever trained. I'm really enjoying it. It can be frustrating at times, but when they start to pick up on things, it's awesome. At 16 weeks I've got her staying and waiting to be released to retrieve dummies. She's even making double retrieves sometimes. You can get a lot of helpful advice from reading the internet. Originally I wanted to send her somewhere to get trained. I don't think I could send my girl off for a few months now. I would miss out on a lot of bonding.

I agree with you on the training part. Might save yourself some money if you make a young puppy listen even if he is going to school. Also walk them in a leash at a young age and never let them ahead of you, always to your side.
