Why do marines carry swords with their dress uniforms?

Watching A Few Good Men and saw the scene where the guy got dressed up before he offed himself. I saw the sword and wondered why they always carried them.

It's a Navy tradition. Marines are a branch of the USN

I'm pretty sure it's tradition for officers of all the branches. Used to be the symbol of an officer back in the day if I remember correctly.

the army and the air force also have them. only time I ever see them in usaf is with certain honor guards and weddings.
