Host Jon Stewart will take an eight-week hiatus from "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" beginning in June, Comedy Central announced Tuesday.
Correspondent John Oliver will fill in while Stewart is directing his first feature film. The movie, titled "Rosewater," was written by Stewart and is based on a book by an Iranian journalist, Maziar Bahari, according to a written statement from Comedy Central.

I wish the other late night hosts would do the same thing when they go on vacation and shite so we don't have to suffer through reruns.

A late night host takes a one week vacation and you "suffer" for it.

He's awesome but not Jon Stewart awesome

Jon Stewart seems like a genuinely good guy. Carrel and Colbert used to work for him, and have gone on to their own projects, Colbert basically directly competing against Stewart, and you never see him do anything but encourage them. Some hosts would be threatened by someone filling in for them for an extended period of time. Plus, I'm sure this took some convincing by Stewart towards his bosses. Good for him for not being a douchebag.

They are different timeslots on the same network......

Colbert basically directly competing against Stewart,

quote:What? Colbert follows Stewart on the same network. How do you equate that with "directly competing"? The only conflict between the two is manufactured for content.

Other than them being at different times on the same network, I hope you don't really believe Colbert is a conservative.

Someone doesn't understand the concept of satire

I'm just a tiny bit concerned that this may be a bit of a test run...Jon Stewart has been doing this for a while now and may be ready to move on from the Daily Show

Jesus. Okay, they have the same "type" of show on the same network. Not many hollywood A-listers would be okay with a former subordinate getting their own show, let alone outright embracing it.

It helps him more than it hurts him. They've created a programming block rather than just a standalone half hour. Same principal behind why you always see clusters of fasst food restaurants or pharmacies on the same intersections.

Stewart owns a piece of the show. There's no competition.
Stewart going away can only be a good thing.

Colbert has been with Comedy Central longer than Stewart. He wanted the Daily Show when Kilbourne was let go. All the othet correspondents said they would do a Carrell or Colbert impersonation.
It is amazing when you think who else came from the show. You also have Ed Helms, and Rob Coddry who are each doing Movie and TV and Beth Littleford is on a hit Disney show and Aasif Maandvi does some TV too. Brian Unger and Mo Rocca also have TV shows on fringe cable channels. So that show has given a good bit of comedians a start.

One is a fake news show with real news and legit interviews.
The other is a fake right wing pundit show, with news and decent interviews.
Both are good TV.

For me, the sketches with the correspondents are usually the stronger part of the Daily Show. So, I think they'll be fine for awhile with John Oliver. Stewart is great when he's on but can be flat sometimes (the last bit of his that I really loved was the Trump eating pizza bit). If anything, the time off might revitalize him.
The Colbert show, on the other hand relies so heavily on him that I'm not sure they could do the show without him. What he is able to do is kind of amazing if you think about it - taking what is really one skit or sketch and basing an entire ongoing show around it.
