NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s emphasis on player safety is borne in part of a fear that a high-impact collision will cause a player to die on the field.

That’s what friends of Goodell’s told Don Van Natta Jr., who wrote a lengthy profile of Goodell for ESPN the Magazine. Goodell frequently speaks about how President Theodore Roosevelt saved the sport of football in the early 20th Century by insisting on reforms after several college players died, and Goodell now hopes that his own reforms can prevent an NFL player from dying today.

When was the last time that happened? If it was commonplace I'd get his concern, but when was the last time someone actually died on the field? The only time I can recall was in the 1800s in a UGA/UVA game, but the player's mother sent a letter to the state requesting that football continue on (since there was a motion to quit playing football alltogether).

Did that ole miss guy mullins die on the field?

It happens in high school because of the sheer numbers. The violence is greater in the NFL but they play nowhere near the amount of games as High Schools across the country.

It statistically will happen at some point.

If he was serious about any of this and wanted to truly make a difference, he would get HGH and other substances out of the game.

It's a legit fear and would be terrible PR for the league.

I'm afraid of a bear ripping my testicle off

Doesn't mean I necessarily believe it will happen

How? If it's never actually happened before, why would statistics mean it will eventually?

That's like saying statistically a player's arm will get ripped off during an NFL game at some point.

So if that's his fear, it's time to relinquish the commish duties.

Those are professionals, if anyone should be worried about dying it would be college players particularly the money bag games when lower divisions with less schollies go up against BCS level teams.

More soccer players have died on the field than football I'd guess.

because it has happened before in football games, just not in the NFL.

If Korey Stringer's case was taken into account, then the answer would be for all teams to play in a dome.

Many times when a high school player dies, it's because of some unknown heart problem. For example, that Dutchtown High student last summer

In the early 70's, a Detroit lions receiver collapsed during a game and died. He was 28, named Chuck something-or-other. Doctor who did his autopsy said he had the heart of a 68 yr old man.

however, Goodell still sucks arse.
