Can anybody recommend any specific material/guide you have had success with? Plan on taking it in a few months. I've heard it's a test of preparation and am looking to get a guide. Do not want to take a course (ie: Kaplan) just a book or so.

If you can, sit in roughly 7th grade to 10th grade math classes. You will smoke the math part of the exam.

I would have crushed that part if I was in high school still when I took it.

Yeah I have been informed that all of the math on the test was taught in middle and high school. Need a good refresher though.

Those prep books are gold...assuming you put in the time.

Get the official study guide and check out Khan academy. I think he is still on the 11th edition. These helped me a ton.

Khan GMAT

Plus when you officially sign up and pay for the test they allow you to download some very useful material, practice test, etc....

I paid for 5 practice tests from Manhattan Prep or something like that. I took one full-length practice test to gauge my level. Then I bought a GMAT questions book from Princeton Review.

When you get a question right, the test asks you a harder question; when you get one wrong, it asks you an easier question. I studied questions in the tier ABOVE where I was scoring, the thought being those were the questions I was missing. Studied for about two weeks during the summer between my junior and senior year of school with a 720 being my highest practice test score. Took the test and scored a 740, so I guess it worked haha.

There were some online webpage I used to help make me sharper when it came to proper comma usage and other grammatical oddities. That helped me the most.

For the math part, you basically just need to have your arithmetic brain cells in good shape so you'll be able to compute things quickly.

But really, for me, it was the little detailed syntax and style rules where I picked up the most points over the competition.

I used Knewton and it bumped my score up 80 points. Also, I tried Knewton and Kaplan's practice tests and neither could replicate the GMAT algorithm very well; I recommend sticking to the two official GMAT practice tests for that.

The Official Guide. Make sure to get the most recent edition. I was able to improve my score 60 points (570 to 630).

I went through the practice quesitons and did ok. Have no idea where I would score. 680 to 700 would be ideal however I could easily do with less. Plenty of time to study for it as I won't be applying until next fall. It sounds like all the books are similar.

Insanely miserable. I did as little as possible and got what I needed.
