Thinking about making a trip out of Venice in either July/August, and wanted to get the lowdown on some of the basics.

After doing some research last year, it looks like for a 6 person trip the cost will be around $400-450/person for everything included. (As long as gas doesn't skyrocket) Is this a good ball park number? I'd rather tell people the high number rather than be short at the end.
Thinking about staying down the night before, night of....is that a good plan? From what I'm told you generally fish from 6AM-6PM.....so I'm not sure if anyone would want to drive back after that (especially if there is a mess of fish to clean).
We would like to target yellowfin.....I heard a lot of good reports last year around that time frame, so I assume it's pretty good. If we would get lucky and limit out, will the captain let us target other species? Mahi/Wahoo?

I'm thinking about checking out Billy Wells availability, I've heard some pretty good reviews from folks who have fished with him. Any one here ever go on a trip with him?

Should be.

Yes

He shouldn't have a problem with it since you are paying for gas. You will most likely have enough after catching a limit of yellowfin.

Never been, but have heard good things. I'm sure the Venice crowd will be in here with a lot more in depth reviews of captains in that area.

Well, there's one less captain that's often on the recommended list to choose from:

I've been onmy own with my buddies 23 ft T top he trailered from Houston. Went to one rig about 20 miles out and caught the crap out of all kinds of fish, first on we're a pair of 55 inch plus wahoos! Fought several yellow fin and a black fin and a four ft barracuda , a king fish and we were done, couldn't reel anymore? We never moved from that rig. Awesome. Bought the wahoos back and two yellow fin. Next time I would try releasing the wahoos. Trolled magnum Rappalas , herring color, caught every thing.

Didn't read but don't go with Lance Walker

why not? He's not even out of Venice, but you chimed in for what reason?

I've had great experiences with Lance.

Be sure to check Eddie Berger also. He is the un-official OB Offshore Guide out of Venice.

Didnt' catch a single tuna. Actually didn't get a bite.

Well you have tuna in your sig pic, so I'm sure you've skunked out once or twice before. Maybe he wasn't feeling the tuna bite.

We were looking to catch tuna

Did anyone tell him this or suggest not to run for snapper? He loves catching tuna so I can only assume something was not right.

his deckhand was an arse.

sorry to hear that part

We caught alot of fish, but the point was we told him when we booked we specifically wanted to go for tuna. To be honest I just got the feeling he had a good idea we weren't going to catch any tuna.

That's why it's called fishing and not catching. Some times of year are better for tuna than others.

We caught alot of fish

And yet you still throw his operation under the bus?

I've fished with shitty deckhands before too. You solve it by not tipping them. Not by belittling the captain anonymously on a message board.

Then he should have told them that it wasn't a good time for tuna so that 1. They could reschedule for a better time of the year or 2. Know this going into it so they didn't get their hopes up.

Heard hunter cabello (spelling?) is good. I went with Howard last year. We did ok but he was a total dick. Not worth going if the guy u r paying is an arse. Even if u catch fish.

Hunter Caballero. Yes. Went with Paradise Outfitters last fall and we caught 3 nice ones (YFT) before the rain came in and cut us short. He then gave us some money back because of the rain; he didn't have to do that. Great guy and awesome boat. His deckhand on that trip was Woody Woods, who is awesome too.
