Do you think it isn't useful for the government to fund research? Or is it the principle of it?

I think government funded research is a slower, more expensive way to get things done.

That's just my opinion.

What is the alternative?

A private investor?

What incentive would a private investor have in funding research?

Is this a "who will build the roads" question?

Is there a specific type of research mentioned earlier that only the government would have interest in?

No because a profit can be made with roads in the form of tolls. Private investors would build roads to make a profit.

So it isn't the same.

Grants are basically giving money away for research.

Gatorade is a perfect example of how private funding into research works.

And corporations do fund research in their own fields because it can benefit them.

But government provides funding for research that isn't in the short-term self-interest of companies.

I don't trust government to take this risk for me. I prefer the risk and reward to fall to the private ventures.

And the atomic bomb is a better example of how government's role in funding research works, unless you lived in Hiroshima.

BTW- wasn't Gatorade created by researchers at the University of Florida

Wasn't Gatorade researched and invented at the University of Florida? A public, government funded university?

Yes. Would the concept be different had it been developed at Vanderbilt, a private school?

Umm... yes. Of course it would be different.

By the way, even private universities get big federal grants for research.

No. The concept is the same, the difference is in who absorbs the risk.

Which I disagree with.

I'm sure this has happened.

Why should government take risk when it doesn't have to?

The notion that goverment shouldn't have a role in research funding is ridiculous. Imagine if the goverment wouldn't have funded the research for our first trip to the moon. Goverment pushed the private sector towards innovation in science and mathematics. Think of all the jobs that have stemmed from that era of goverment funded research to today? The same rule applies with the Internet revolution and medical research initiatives that save lives.

Im not saying private companies don't have a role to play in research and innovation because they do. My point is we are best served when both sectors are invested.

The point is that universities wouldn't be able to do nearly as much research without government grants.

National defense and research are two areas that I think are important roles of the federal government.

This is just more who will build the roads nonsense.

From an article on the wright brothers:

quote:

But Brownfield argues that the tale of government support for development of the airplane is a bit complicated:

There's a curious fact of history that Chu leaves out. Harry P. Wolfe and John Semmens explain that before the Wright brothers' famous flight (which they funded without government help), Dr. Samuel Langley of the Smithsonian Institution used a $70,000 U.S. government grant to create an airplane. What happened? It crashed into the Potomac River, the Wright brothers succeeded in their flight nine days later, and Langley laid much of the blame on "inadequate" Federal funding. So much for government's "intimate role" in technology.

Research as currently handled is ridiculous. They pay people for research, not necessarily for results. I like the idea of prizes, like NASA in the '60s. Give a big reward to the people or companies that come up with the desired technology, design, etc.
