This should turn into an interesting thread considering people generally only like one brand.

Options Include, but are not limited to:
1.) Yamaha
2.) Mercury
3.) Honda
4.) Johnson/Evinrude
5.) Suzuki
6.) Nissan/Tohatsu

For a specific boat or just in general? Salt or fresh?

I'd probably have Yamaha at 1 and Suzuki/Honda at 2 and 3.

1. Mercury
2. Yamaha

Yamaha would be number one but their series 1 HPDIs scare me off from buying one . Those things were burning up powerheads like crazy up here

Doesn't matter. Whichever one you do more, or have more experience with. I'll assume that not everyone has the ability to fish both.

I have a Yamaha on two of my boats. A 70(freshwater) and a 150(Saltwater). I haven't had a problem with either except that the 150 is a bitch to crank. The 70 turns over instantly no matter what.

In small outboards I'm partial to tohatsu. We use a 25 on a 14 foot john, and it pushes 4 with a dog/gear like nothing I have ever experienced before. We call it the drug runner. Mercurys shift on the handle suck, suck I tell ya.

It was only the HPDI that was having issues . and 200 plus HP . It was something to with the oil injection system . They have upgraded since with the series 2 and you can convert the old ones to the new upgrade . i know they both (mercury , Yamaha ) have their pros and cons tho .

Suzuki has the most power in its class, at least they say. I like the Tohatsu's that I've seen, and I found out that they actually make a lot of the parts for the larger companies. Hell anything under a 25 is most likely the same motor as a Tohatsu according to what I read.

My dad HATES Mercury for a reason unknown to me. I have no problems paying for one as I think now days your going to get about the same quality out of any of them, and it just depends on how you treat them.

Based on my experiences

1. Yamaha
2. Evinrude
3. Suzuki
4. Mercury

I hate how mercurys sound and run. Plus they don't hold up as well in salt water.

2 and 1 could be swapped. They are really close. As a outboard mechanic, my list would be:

4.
2
1
3
6
