Top 200 Movies We Agree Don’t Suck

Cheers to the greatest message board on the internet. Over the years we have cultivated a small, active and fairly wide spread community talking about film and television. We’ve had some fun discussions, some interesting discussions, some heated discussions and a lot of fun.

5 Years ago, we embarked on a small experiment to catalog what we thought were “Movies We Agree Don’t Suck.” We decided it wasn’t a “Best Movies Ever List,” and it wasn’t an “Our Favorite Movies List.” It sat somewhere between that discussion; it was a list that evoked the best of what film had to offer AND the ability of film to entertain. “We have a lot of different tastes and a decent amount of posters, that alone should level out inconsistencies. It'll be a mixture of the overly critical and some of your average ‘I just want to be entertained’ moviegoers,” as the thread once said. And I think that has stood with all of our lists.

So here we are. 5 years later, with some new posters, more than a few new films, and probably some changes in our personal tastes. But does the idea still stand? Can we make a list that simply attempts to find the best of film, films that sufficiently connect with culture AND have consistent quality? This time, we’ll cast larger ballots, 40, and hopefully compile a list that is the double the size of the last one, at 200.

Without delay, let's get down to the rules, as normal:

Ballots will be posted in this thread as a response. Please label your films 1-40, with 1 being the highest, 2 next and so forth (doesn't matter how you list them, forwards or backwards, but make sure 1 is your top film). I will let the thread sink in for two weeks, then I will lock in answers with an announcement (as in, "NO FURTHER CHANGES FROM NOW ON) I will bump this thread daily until the first list is posted, I'm sure it will take a couple of days to start getting lists in.
PLEASE LIST ALL DATES of the films you include

**In terms of trilogies and sequels, only 4 film sets CAN be listed as one entry, that list is: KILL BILL, Trois Couleurs, Godfather 1 and 2, and LORD OF THE RINGS. All other sets are separate films.**

**USE THIS THREAD FOR VOTING ONLY**

I am also taking the list of volunteers for write-ups. You know the drill. If you love film and want to unleash your Shakespearean eloquence upon the masses, sign up.

Writers:
Freauxzen
H-Town
DanglingFury
Jamolhn
iwyLSUiwy
Baloo
OMLandshark
RollTide1987
etm512
magildachunks

We are also going to be writing point-counterpoint for the top 5, so there will be very specific articles assigned.

Point-CounterPoint: Baloo, Freauxzen, iwyLSUiwy

Enjoy have fun, and pay attention to the rules. Thank you.

WARNING: Baloo will be nuking non-vote posts in this thread, please see the other thread for discussion.

**THREE LAST RULES:
PLEASE ONLY POSTS BALLOTS IN THIS THREAD
PLEASE ONLY POST ONCE AND EDIT YOUR POST WHEN NECESSARY
PLEASE ADD THE WORD 'FINAL' When you finish your ballot**

See below for a ballot example. *cough*everyonemustncludejohncarpentermovies*cough*

You've got an extra one, since the Godfather I&II should be one entry.

Again, the sample pool is too small (just sayin), but:

1. Star Wars (not the franchise)
2. Blade Runner
3. The African Queen
4. Se7en
5. Dr. Zhivago
6. The Searchers
7. The Hustler
8. 12 Monkeys
9. Gallipoli
10. Casablanca
11. Godfathers 1/2
12. The Legend of 1900
13. Raiders of the Lost Ark
14. Psycho
15. The Endless Summer
16. Shawshank Redemption
17. Once Upon a Time in the West
18. Enter the Dragon
19. The Matrix (not the franchise)
20. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
21. Conan the Barbarian
22. Return of the Jedi
23. TDKR (just to piss y'all off)
24. Airplane
25. The Hunt for Red October
26. Seven Samurai
27. A Place in the Sun
28. I'm Gonna Git You, Sucka
29. Ben Hur
30. The Sting
31. LOTR
32. Excalibur
33. Full Metal Jacket
34. Aliens
35. Apocalypse Now
36. Shane
37. Pulp Fiction
38. The Road Warrior
39. Chinatown
40. Condorman (for my little brother)

It's the fun list. I didn't put much effort into ranking them and I left out a lot of older movies. Frankly, I have far too many favorites and ranking a top 40 would take days.

I may do a write-up or two, but I don't need to be on your gay little list.

ETA: and I'll change a few of these, as I just pulled Semen Demons to include Dr. Zhivago.

ETA: re-ranked a few, and I'm happy with the current ranking. Also, I added numbers for you.
