I'm excluding Alaska in this discussion because it wins hands down if I just said "in the US"

I'm going to have to say California.

What say you?

I'd say LA would be high up there too, you have the best saltwater fishing in the world, the MS river oxbows offer some of the best freshwater fishing in the country and MS river bottoms produce some half decent hunting.

I'm taking into account everything for an outdoorsman.

As far as I know, I can still hunt in California with a gun.

if we're just talking about fishing, maybe

but LA lacks so much in the hunting part that it really shouldn't be considered

If you can do without saltwater fishing, Montana has to be up there with tons of land to and species to hunt and fish.

This is true for everything west of about a 5 mile distance from the MS river
I'm a bigger fisherman anyway but if i had to be anywhere but LA I'd say Wyoming or Colorado maybe Tennessee

for now. It's against the law to hunt with any bullets other than hollow points in Cali, yet they are trying to ban hollow point bullets.

California.

Saying California is akin to saying the Gulf Coast. You would have to specify what part of California. SoCal has great blue water fishing, near shore fishing and bass fishing and easy access to mulies, but nothing to speak of for bird hunting, white tails, etc...

And then if you say north Cal, you lose the blue water and bass fishing but gain trout fishing and salmon fishing, add in black tails and elk, so you can't just say "California" or, if you do, then I would say, from TX to FL

For deer maybe, but that's not the only thing you can hunt.

not really

the Appalachian states now have elk seasons

the NE states have moose and bear

I don't think you can consider any state that just has whitetail as it's big game animal as a top state

I will agree with you that California has a wonderful and diverse environment, but that does nto overcome the fact that the political climate is not outdoorsman friendly.

Boating is extremely crowded, the Delta is practically impossible to fish when its warm due ot the number of boats.

OHV access, while they have alot of land, its getting shut down at an alarming rate. Access fees are high, rules for vehicles are absurd, they banned 2 strokes....

We wont even get started on gun laws.

that is why I said California

because of it's diversity within the state

I guess we can't say Montana either?

I'm not saying its the best for everything but there is a wide range of species on the river like deer, turkey, squirrel, now black bear and so on. There's plenty of place in far east LA for great hunting

I'd vote Colorado. World class trout fishing. Elk, mule deer, sheep, mountain goat, and moose in the high country. Antelope, and whitetails in the flatlands. Great hiking all over the state, tons of public land and national forests. Over the counter elk tags. Waterfowl hunting is great in certain areas. Ect.......
