So, he runs up the field past the QB in anticipation of a pass?

Lol, being pushed back isn't why he was bad against the run. It's been explained multiple times why he was bad against the run, and it had nothing to do with being manhandled by o-linemen or being pushed back.

Where was that ever said? He has a habit of going very wide on his pass rush, and many times this leads to running backs getting handed the ball and going right through the hole created by Smith going extremely wide. This is a pretty regular thing for Smith actually. Not sure how someone who watches games could even debate this.

But yes, sometimes when you go wide your momentum can easily take you past the qb.

That is his current weight

So Charles Grant was also in the 280's by the time he was let go right? Even if that is in fact his weight, that's like 3 pounds lighter than Jordan. Or you saying this 3 pounds is the difference between being big enough to play the position and not being able to? Plus, as was listed, many 3-4 DE's are around that range, if not smaller.

we are in a bind because of Loomis, not him

but i see your point. As i said, they asked him to restructure for a reason. If he does not, i agree, you boot him.

but its hard to cut starter-caliber players on a defense that already lacks talent. Vilma is the only one that is clear cut replaceable.

Harper imo cannot be cut.

Will Smith is borderline.

Wouldn't it be better for the cap if he took a lot less money to stay, than them taking a hit to cut him? This is the part I don't understand about the argument I've seen some of you make. If the best thing for the cap is to straight cut him, wouldn't the team do that instead of trying to keep him? There has to be some logical reason they are offering him the chance to stay on the team.

That pretty much sums it up it up for me...if he takes a major cut, good deal. I just hope even if he's there for the minimum, he can be more than a sub. If that's all he's got left, I'd rather see the team go in a different direction altogether.

A lot more than sometimes with Smith the last couple of years. Being pushed past the QB and being stonewalled by the OT at the line were his two most predominate moves last year.

Jordan is in shape and strong as a bull.

Smith isn't nearly as strong and doesn't anchor nearly as well as he does. It's not just "Oh he was trying to get up field and he took himself out of the play." He's just not as strong as he looks. If he was he would have gotten more than 6 sacks with his beastly bull rush.

Cap came in at $123.9m, so there's two extra 3rd string/special teams roster spots filled with the extra $900k.

Yes. But who is to say he will take a pay cut? I don't want him on the team because they will play him and I don't want that.

So his physical tools have only gotten better. He's been staying in tip top shape.

ETA: 2012, just last year.

I don't want him to start either. I just disagree with the notion that he can't play in a 3-4. Mainly I just want the team to do what's best for the cap. If that's cutting him, fine. If that's keeping him, I'm also fine with that.

I think he CAN play the 3-4, but I don't agree with Lester that "He's the perfect 3-4 DE."
