So I'm watching "Willy Wonka" for about the 2000th time since my 2 year old loves it, and something has been really bothering me ever since he began to watch it.

Who pays for the feeding frenzy that those little rotten brats go on in the opening scene? Taking whatever they want. How is someone supposed to make a living like that? And why does the shop guy just let them? I mean, poor Charlie is having to eat cabbage water every night and work his butt off to help support his mom and 4 lame grandparents. And then poor Charlie is on the outside looking in at the frenzy, helpless. It's just not right.

I've thought that exact thing before. Clearly that candyman dude isn't in the business for the money. Makes you wonder what he has a candy store near an elementary school for. Hmmm....

i thought that too when i used to watch it

why didnt he just go in and blend in with the kids getting free stuff?

But then, perhaps Charlie was too proud to accept any charity candy?

or perhaps after the kids are done eating all that sugar and bouncing off the walls, and pass out, then they are woken up and it's time to pay the fiddler

ETA: also used to wonder as a kid, where in the HELL was that filmed because that totally didnt look like any city/town I'd ever seen. and yea it was in Germany so that made sense

Yeah, that thought also crossed my mind, but I just didn't allow myself to jump too deeply into that thought.

Let's not forget that he's a fairly creepy dude.

Offer candy, lure him over, stick it in and make him scream.

They should come out with a Slugworth bar IRL like the Wonka bar.

...and it should have raisins in it.

You scared me.

I had to go look up the actual lyrics to make sure this really wasn't in the movie.

Do we know why Charlie and his family were living in "England"? Why were they and Willy Wonka the only people in the film ( aside from the American winners) the ones with American accents. Actually I think a few of his classmates had American accents as well. That bothered me. And something about four old people sleeping in a bed together creeped me out. Still loved the movie though.
